It was a real honor to celebrate social worker and suicidologist Jerry Reed at the #AAS19 conference in Denver. I appreciate that Jerry always identifies himself as a social worker. His work makes a difference in the world.

My motivation for writing my book, for talking about how imperfect my life was, was the knowledge that I could help others. #HASLC19 #AAS19

@DrJAshton After Rob killed himself I kept having the irrational thought that everyone was going to blame me. "She must be awful." But when I finally went back to work, all of my colleagues at @GMA were nothing but supportive. #HASLC19 #AAS19

Jennifer Ashton: My perfectionism started with my parents' divorce: if I could be perfect I would never experience pain or suffering again. My perfectionism was so intense that when my husband and I decided to divorce I decided I was going to have the best divorce ever. #AAS19

Beyond excited about @procAnna's talk, The Social Roots of Adolescent Suicide Clusters. "What causes a single suicide to escalate to a cluster through social relationships? Why do some places, but not others, house disproportionate rates of suicide risk?" #AAS19

Dr. David Satcher ends with a call to persevere. "I usually quote other people, but I'll end with my own quote." #AAS19

Dr. David Satcher, perhaps unintentionally, provided an excellent historical perspective on how we thought and talked about suicide in the early 2000s. #AAS19

I can speak for @AASuicidology President @davidwcovington that it was an honor and privilege to meet Dr. David Satcher. His leadership as Surgeon General set the groundwork for our current public health approach to addressing suicide in America. #AAS19

Dr. David Satcher: Public health is the collective efforts of a society to create the conditions in which people can be healthy. This is why we consider suicide a public health problem. #AAS19

Former US Surgeon General David Satcher beings his plenary with a poem he first heard at @Morehouse, "I have only just a minute" by Dr. Benjamin E. Mays. Inspirational way to begin his talk.

Only sixty seconds in it..."

If you want to start a teenline, make sure you have youth leaders. Having youth leaders in a mental health focused setting will make it more inviting for teens. We recruit teens who represent all youth experiences. For more info text AAS2019 to 85511 #AAS19

"Being a @TEENLINEONLINE volunteer has helped me lose the last shreds of stigma around the issues we all face in our lives." "I've been a volunteer for 8 months; it has changed my life. I've questioned biases and assumptions, made friends, and become more open-minded." #AAS19

Working at @TEENLINEONLINE has improved my help-seeking behavior.
We have between 4 - 8 volunteers in a big room. The volunteers often have personal experience with a lot of these issues. We've become great friends. We use the peer support model with eachother #AAS19

Q: Why does peer-to-peer work? A (Zakia): Adults are great, but if you're talking about your first break up / failing a test, adults respond in hindsight. We (youth) understand in realtime & provide immediate validation. This sets the tone for future help-seeking. #AAS19
