The monument was installed on September 1, 2009 by the beginning of the new academic year in the most famous film institute of the country and is dedicated to two events: the 90th anniversary of the Institute and the 80th anniversary of the birth of director Vasily Shukshin. The author of the monument is sculptor Alexei Blagovestnov. This monument was replaced by a monument to the movie camera installed earlier in the same place. Three bronze figures are located on the steps at the entrance to the main building of the VGIK: Shukshin is sitting, and Tarkovsky and Shpalikov are standing side by side. The inscription on the wall of the institute: VGIKOVTSAM (graduates of VGIK) — Andrei Tarkovsky, Gennady Shpalikov, Vasily Shukshin
