It was a fun session at #AdlWW Adelaide Writers Week with Markus Zusak discussing his book, ‘Three Wild Dogs (and the truth)’.Why so engaging?First, dogs! 🐕 Second, Zusak takes as long as me, via the most roundabout, multiple story way possible, to answer a question. Loved it!
A must read. #books

Back at #AdlWW Adelaide Writers Week on the best day for weather yet.
Listening to Pip Williams interviewing Daisy Goodwin about her book ‘Diva’. I must read this. Much more to Maria Callas than the misinformed recent movie

David Speers starts his interview with the Premier of SA by asking if he’d agree that J.D. Vance is a “ knob” . The Premier tactfully declines to agree , not the kind of language he’d use. ABC TV’s Insider’s show is here at #adlww for the third year to a full house .

That was bizarre. Random old guy asking Tobias Buck if Germans will ever forgive the Jews for Auschwitz. Was asked if had got mixed up, nope. He was serious. He thinks Germans blame Jews for the holocaust. Stunned silence.

He is wrong, as we know.

RM: Colleen Taylor was the perfect public servant and did everything she could to sound the alarm. If you're ever wondering what you should do as a public servant, ask yourself what would Colleen do.

RM: by definition you couldn't get a Robodebt if you didn't work. He rejects the characterisation of deserving vs undeserving, but these people weren't "job snobs" they were the "have a go get a go" people

RM: the notorious 2014 budget created the conditions for Robodebt - huge pressure to find additional savings in the 2015 financial year.

RM: Our culture has a pervasive suspicion that someone is getting something they don't deserve. The scrutiny tends to go on the poor and disadvantaged rather than the rich and privileged.

Some people didn't even know they had a debt until other government income (eg tax return, family tax benefits) were garnished.

Reverse onus of proof means people had to prove they didn't owe the money.

Govt often already had the evidence in their files, but didn't use it.

RM: story of Rhys Cauzzo. Was 'just a kid' living in Melbourne. He ended up getting chased by private debt collectors and died by suicide.

Another woman trying to get into rehab slid back into heroin addiction and died of an overdose.

RM: came late to covering the Robodebt story, for a number of reasons.

But he has always had a fascination with bureaucratic absurdity in literature: Kafka, Catch-22, Douglas Adams.
