Nativity scene previously on display at Dulwich Picture Gallery. Notes from the exhibition as follows: “Although neither were believers, Garwood and Ravilious were close friends of Guy Hepher, vicar of Castle Hedingham, and his family. Garwood contributed decorations for the various festive occasions in the church calendar, notably Harvest Festival (for which she baked loaves moulded into the shapes of exotic creatures) and Christmas.
The swallowtailed angels in her design for a nativity scene come from an unusual source: a photo Ravilious owned of The Triumph of Death, a painting by 14th-century Italian artist Andrea Orcagna. The finished work (shown below included the distinctive silhouette of Castle Hedingham in the background.” Second image to follow.

“Snow falls over the back garden of Bank House, the Ravilious family home in Castle Hedingham, with the tower of the castle itself just visible in the distance. Like the mannequins, toys and dolls in Garwood's wood engravings and paintings, this snow woman seems strangely alive in her patch of half-cleared snow. As in Garwood's later paintings, this surreal quality is enhanced by the footprints in the snow, bare branches and other everyday details of the scene.” Dulwich Picture Gallery exhibition notes.
