Lilu stands on an old picnic table on the shore of Ross Lake. One of Hera's favourite campgrounds and swimming holes.
Lilu checks out some smells in the snowy moss on our hike.
Lilu looks out over one of the many ponds along the trail. It's surprising how many ducks are still around for this time of year.
With it being such a nice day for this time of year, we went to celebrate my late sister Hera's birthday hiking one of her favourite trails. It was my first time here, so I got to be the leader of the pack! #AlbertaParks #prairies #lakelife #adventuredog #canadianpoodle #hiking #autumn

Corythosaurus skeleton at Dinosaur Provincial Park. Corythosaurus remains are abundant at DPP, and itโs really one of those classic late Cretaceous Alberta dinosaurs #FossilFriday #Alberta #AlbertaParks #Dinosaur
Lilu looking grumpy as she watches me start to pack up camp.
A little bit of sunset showed through the storm clouds last night.
We made a detour on the way home so we could give the girls a stop off at their favourite off leash park.
Someone was pup-set that we only camped for one night. Sorry Lilu, we were just testing out the new car-camping tent to see how it is in the rain. Spoiler alert: It didn't rain last night like it was supposed to. #AlbertaParks #DillberyLakeProvincialPark #poodlesofbluesky #prairies #outdoors

Easy access to the creek that runs through the red rock canyon can be found in the lower stretch. In the afternoon, this whole area is filled with people. Cloudy peak can be seen in the distance.
The view down into the canyon from the bridge that spans the furthest point on the trail. This was around noon, and the light was getting close to dropping into the canyon.
Blakiston Fall, with about 20 ft of freefall and another 15 ft or so leading into it. A couple of viewing platforms are built near the falls, including where this photo is taken from.
A second, smaller falls above Blakiston falls. There are a few good views that are worth going just past the falls for. Mt Blaksiton left of center.

Looking west across the highest point along Avion Ridge. Most of that upper area you'll actually be hiking maybe thrity feet below the ridge on the other side.
The long walk along the backside of Avion ridge before you'll do a steep climb again. No photos, but after I did this part I saw a mountain goat absolutely haul full speed down this slope. Had heard him kicking rocks from above as I passed.
This section of the Hike to the top of Avion ridge was very steep, but had pretty wide solid rock trail to ascend. Goes from about 7400' to 7800'.
Close to the highest point you'll get on Avion ridge (althouh Newman Peak would have taken you higher). Wildflowers dot the ridgeline as you go. After hiking the backside, youโll follow beside that snowline before descending into the unseen canyon.

Looking towards Newman Peak (left) and Spionkop ridge behind it. Wildflowers lined the ground along this pass.
Looking towards Newman Peak from the ridge line between it and Avion Ridge. A trail may be seen cutting along the scree to the right to get to the next ridge. It then ascends to the peak and can either loop or return the way you came. I was unaware of the loop and just came back across the scree field.
Looking Northeast from the pass below Newman Peak. Spread Eagle mountain in the distance and Yarrow creek flowing from the lake in the valley.
Photo of me on the pass below Newman Peak. The flat area was incredibly wide along this pass.

Close-up of a wood frog (speckled brown with a black strip across its eye), trying to be discreet as it hides in the grass.

Fun fact: in Alberta, there are 8 native species of frogs and toads (of Canada's 24).

Sometimes itโs trial and error, like when you forget how to take night sky photos and thus leave some of your equipment and home. Cue instructing your spouse to run back and forth with their phone camera. Heโs a good sport ๐
