“I… uh… where did everyone go?” I sputtered. It was all I could manage. “Oh, the other humans? I think they all scattered into the night. Mostly screaming.” She explained this all matter-of-factly, still smiling in her friendly, calm way. I gaped at her, stunned by her blunt explanation. But she was… an alien. (Some small ADHD part of my brain noted that, being an alien comprised of unknown biology, she may not consider herself a “she” in any way that humans would use the pronoun, but I didn’t think that now was an appropriate time to ask about preferred pronouns.) And… aliens had somehow shown up on Earth, created islands practically overnight, and next they planned to create a zoo the size of a small continent. To house alien creatures. Why was I still here? Shouldn’t I have run away too?
