Chapter 11 – Trust "Even when I trust them, I’m unable to let my guard down, because I’m convinced they can’t love me." This chapter (POV Zoro) focuses on repairing the bond between Zoro and Sanji. They trust each other, but it doesn't mean Sanji had his guard down with Zoro. Sanji's sentence is contradicted by the chapter: Zoro does love Sanji. He loved him platonically before the barriers went down, and now he's falling in love with what they hid. Despite his harsh words, Zoro's feelings prove Sanji wrong on all accounts. Also, when Zoro confirms Sanji has control over his changes, he finally accepts the new him, because he trusts Sanji to make his own choices. Chapter 12 – The Facade "And if they love me, how do I know if it’s really for myself and not for the facade I present to them so I don’t get hurt?"

Byron returned to its peaceful atmosphere, though Sanji still finds it quite mysterious. Mary left for her home island the day after Sanji’s revelations. He flirted with her until the very last second, demanding a kiss with every step she took on the dock – she happily obliged. He tried to jump in the water to chase after her in a grand romantic gesture, but Nami grabbed him by the collar mid-dive and knocked him out for good measure. Usopp found the interaction hilarious, Zoro ridiculous. However, when they noticed his teary eyes, they both took him in their arms. Even the swordsman, who didn’t hesitate to mock him at the same time. Sanji slapped him on the head in response, Zoro laughed, then slapped him back. Sanji defended himself. They slapped each other’s hands, grunting, until Nami hit them again. Sanji enjoyed the experience. Usopp let them get up on their own, but he intertwined his fingers with Sanji’s to remind him he’s there, and he patted Zoro on the shoulder to calm him down. Did Usopp understand that Zoro has his own way of distracting him, and that this little scuffle made him forget his pain?

Sanji shouts out:

“Luffy! Hug!”

The sound of a cavalcade is heard, and his captain throws himself at him in an impeccable tackle.

Writing Process - All Barriers Down Commentary (or: I like to challenge myself into headaches) Respect the POV order no matter where the scenario is at (help) I started the fic with a Sanji point of view in order to put off the reader about his changes. I wanted to show how genuine he is, and what the changes trigger in him emotionally as well. Then, it was necessary to go with Zoro’s POV because I wanted to show how flabbergasted he was. It was the funniest way to do it. Then I realized the situation in this fic had to imply Usopp, because I didn’t see how Usopp could reject Sanji in this predicament.

Barriers Down Sanji VS Zoro (nightmare) I had to take into consideration my concept of (almost) all barriers down Sanji, so he doesn’t feel threatened/doesn’t recognize when he is threatened, but to keep in mind that their conflictual tendencies are deeper than that, rooted in their nature itself. Like, they’re soul rivals, and with all the Thriller Bark references, I couldn’t even distance myself from this idea… So, basically, how do you keep the rivalry without the receptivity?

Another commentary. I'm not sure I've managed, but that's what I tried to do with this fic. It was a great writing exercise!

The gen-AI-using antagonist, Usopp and identity - All Barriers Down Commentary Yes, this is an anti-genAI canon-compliant One Piece fanfiction. I probably failed at making it obvious enough but well… My main bad guy is symbolically doing the equivalent of using AI to write his stories: he has prompts, basic ideas, but instead of just getting inspiration from reality, he takes real people’s lives and personalities, their identity, and just watches the story write itself. And he has the guts to get annoyed when someone (Luffy) disturbs his plot. In need of a bad guy I tried to write an original bad guy with Malbec. I wanted an antagonist with powers to create the Victorian urban fantasy context, but I left myself some time to decide what said powers were. I needed to keep him hidden for a while. Everything unlocked when I put Usopp in the crypt. I needed to occupy my main antagonist anyway, so I made him a poor 50 years old who spent the last 24 hours chasing Luffy, destructor of scenarios’ consistency. “I’m sorry.” They raise their eyebrows, but Sanji immediately frowns. He’s ready to defend himself if the swordsman messes up. Or to attack. Usopp knows he’s here to serve as his safeguard. Sanji reassures him, but perhaps the opposite is also somewhat true? “What are you talking about? You don’t have to apologize for those jerks. I know you’re not like them.” Sanji is good at reading Zoro, and sometimes they understand each other so well that they can no longer communicate with words, go too far in what they express, create tension because they don’t know how to talk about it. And why would they need to talk when they can convey everything with a glance or a growl? However, Usopp is still impressed by the insecurities Sanji casually draws out of Zoro. He understands why Zoro hates being seen through, but for once, the swordsman doesn’t get angry – quite the opposite, in fact. “You think?” he spits bitterly. “Is that why I told you I preferred the old you? Why I was a selfish asshole and you didn’t even resent me because you’re incapable of resenting people? Even us?!” Zoro points at him, and Usopp understands he’s talking about men in general. He doesn’t have time to process the other, far more terrible information, because Zoro continues: “Is that why you let me choose, and instead of telling me to fuck off like I deserved, you kissed me?!”

“Fuck, Zoro… How could you say that…”

“Sanji. Anything else you need from me?” The future pirate king’s tone has become serious again. His gaze is piercing. Sitting on the grass, elbows on his knees, the cook shivers. He lowers his head, but Zoro has time to see his eyes shine. “A hug, please.” “No, it’s fine, don’t worry about me,” lies the ghost of the former Sanji, while Zoro feels his body vibrate despite himself, as if he wanted to respond to the request. He’s not the only one, because Nami has suddenly straightened up. The situation is clearly more serious than anything she could have imagined, and at the same time, she seems to know more than he does, just enough to look both curious and devastated. Usopp moves closer, as if preparing to throw himself at Sanji if necessary. Luffy lets out a small chuckle. He stands up, positions himself between Sanji’s long, spread legs, and collapses in front of him. His elastic ankles go over the powerful thighs, his arms wrap around the chest that deflates in a relieved exhalation. The cook hugs him close, Luffy responds to the embrace and doesn’t let go. “I don’t want to force this on anyone, so I’ll understand if you’d rather not know… but given the situation, I feel like I owe this to you.” To his surprise, instead of turning to Usopp, Sanji turns to him and adds: “Especially you.” “You don’t owe me anything, cook. As if to confirm Gévaudan’s hypothesis, he recoils, terrified by the contact and the idea of hurting his friend. Vladimir may never be able to touch him again. Gone, the childish squabbles, the nudges in the ribs, the attempts to strangle each other by the collar… Gone too, perhaps, the loud arguments, because the former vampire will be too afraid of his own violence, and the former future werewolf will have traumatic memories of what he endured. “We’ve already changed, anyway. Many times.” Gévaudan points to their old marine uniforms. “People change. It’s normal. It’s not necessarily a bad thing.” Sanji senses Zoro tensing up beside him; Usopp sniffs, a little further behind them. Franky is already whimpering, one of his big fingers under his snot-covered nose.

Zoro rushes toward her, Gary harassing him in vain. With a swift movement, he grabs the handle of the silver blade between Sanji’s fingers. Usopp grimaces and shakes his hand, but he knows the wings of the pirate king are incapable of hurting each other. The cook’s precious appendages are intact. Zoro plunges the foil into the wolf’s chest. She expires. The count takes advantage of the occasion and bites the swordsman, clinging to his back. Sanji, hearts bursting from every pore of his skin, kicks Gary and yells: “You leave my boyfriend alone right now!” Another blow, then a series of vicious kicks assault the vampire lord as Sanji rants in time with his attacks: “And why. Is everyone. Hot?! You are. Starting. To piss me off!”

Zoro groans with a mixture of pain and thirst, but out of respect for the decision of this new Sanji, who doesn’t even pretend to struggle beneath him, who is so sure of his affection for him, he licks the red liquid oozing from the wound. He feels the cook’s other hand press against his pale nose to stop the evidence of his arousal and can’t help but snicker. Sanji is still an idiot, deep down, and maybe… “Chéri…” The tone is soft, placid. Yet it is also a cry of resignation Zoro did not expect. Too preoccupied with his thirst, however, he licks a second time, feeling the empirical urge to bite erase all his concerns. “Zoro,” the cook’s strangled voice resumes. “Did you like me better before?” His lips caress the wound, as if to apologize for inflicting it. He resists only to respond to Sanji and because the blood is still flowing enough to satisfy him. “Yes.” The body beneath him tenses. Against his teeth, Zoro feels the sob Sanji is holding back.

“Would you rather I go back, then? Whatever the reason I changed?”
