Kia ora koutou Prime Minister and the Coalition Government We are writing this letter to express our concern at the recent appointment of Simeon Brown to Minister of Health. The Minister of Health is responsible for overseeing abortion care in Aotearoa New Zealand. Given the promise that was forced out of you, Prime Minister Luxon, during the 2023 election not to curtail access to abortion, it seems like a provocation to appoint Mr Brown to this role given he has been an anti-abortion advocate for his entire adult life. While a student at the University of Auckland, Mr Brown was the President of ProLife Auckland and successfully affiliated the group with the Auckland University Students’ Association. While in Parliament, Mr Brown voted against the Abortion Legislation Act 2020 at its first, second and final reading. Mr Brown made “no apology” for his opposition to reform, instead introducing a Supplementary Order Paper proposing to track New Zealand women’s fertility by recording the number of abortions and live births a person had. Mr Brown also voted against the Contraception, Sterilisation and Abortion (Safe Areas) Amendment Act 2022 at all three readings. In 2022, Mr Brown celebrated the decision of the Supreme Court of the United States in Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health, which curtailed abortion rights in America. Given Mr Brown’s persistent opposition to New Zealanders’ bodily autonomy in the face of massive public support for abortion – 78 per cent of New Zealanders support the right to an abortion – his appointment leaves us concerned and perplexed about the state of affairs. How can you, Prime Minister, assure women across Aotearoa New Zealand that their access to healthcare will not be affected given Mr Brown’s personal, ideological views about women’s private medical decisions?
