Projected on a wall, this graph shows population by millions in NYC from 1900 to 2020. Line categories are: total population, White, Black, Hispanic, Asian. The total population starts at 3.5 million in 1900 and almost entirely white. At 1950, total population neared 8 million and proportionate white population of more than 6 million. After 1950, white population proportion decreases until 2020 when it is only slightly above the Hispanic pop, both below 3 million. Asian pop at the lowest of the categories, still almost 1.5 million people. 2020 population total just below 9 million.

Projected on a wall, this bar graph shows population by percentage category in NYC from 1950 to 2020. Bar categories are: total population, White, Black, Hispanic, Asian. Each bar represents a ten year period.

In 1950: White population at 87.3%, Black pop at 9.2%, Hispanic pop at 3.1%, and negligent pop of Asians.

In 1950: White population at 30.9%, Black pop at 20.2%, Hispanic pop at 28.3%, and Asian pop of 15.6%. There is a small but noticeable sliver of Other pops at the top of the 2020 bar.

There is a diversity index value below each year bar on the graph. However, I didn't catch the explanation of how it was calculated.

Diversity Index: 22.8, 37.0, 54.0, 62.8, 73.4, 73.9, 75.7. Each figure corresponds to a ten year bar on the graph, from 1950 to 2020.

I attended a panel discussion at Hunter earlier this month. I didn't realize just how much the demographics of NYC has changed over decades!
