On 24 September 1973, the PAIGC unilaterally proclaimed a republic after a decade of the liberation war and political organizing. Long before Lisbon gave in, PAIGC fighters had liberated the majority of the countryside and built their own administration, registering births, running schools and clinics, and holding people’s courts.At the heart of this struggle was Amílcar Cabral. Born in Bafatá to a Cape Verdean father and a Guinean mother, he was not only a commander, but also one of the sharpest anti-colonial thinkers of his time. Cabral argued that national liberation had to transform daily life—through education, culture, and political participation—otherwise independence would remain hollow. In 1972, the PAIGC even held elections in the liberated zones to choose a national assembly, proof that sovereignty was already being exercised.Cabral was assassinated in Conakry in January 1973 by agents within his party, acting under the influence of Portuguese fascist intelligence. He did not live to see independence. Yet his vision endured. Within weeks of the proclamation, dozens of states recognized Guinea-Bissau and the UN followed, isolating Portugal internationally. The costs of its colonial wars, above all in Guinea, helped fracture the dictatorship at home. When the Carnation Revolution toppled the regime in 1974, Portugal was forced to recognize what Cabral’s movement had already achieved: an independent country, administered by its own people, whose struggle had also opened the door to democracy in Lisbon.
