Curiously, FB wouldn't let me just "reshare" an old post from January 2015 so I'm just going to post reshare anew here. The original post follows:

Growing up as a little kid in 1970, you couldn't escape hearing Andrew Lloyd Weber's groundbreaking rock opera, Jesus Christ Superstar, on the radio, a studio recording that preceded any live or filmed staging. Important perspective now 40+ years on where many just know it for the movie version.

After The Who's Tommy, JCS was the next big rock opera to break out into the mainstream. Today I found an original UK pressing ($2 at a fave thrift shop) which is a completely different packaging experience than the relatively subdued US (brown/beige) version, with a fold out "star" design featuring various artist renditions of JC inside.

The booklet shows faces of the artists including Deep Purple's Ian Gillan. Very very curious distinct differences in how this then-controversial show was marketed in the States vs. the US.

Added new 2026 thoughts: I suspect The Who's Face Dances (1981) cover art was at least minimally inspired by this... That said, this cover would never have flown well in the US ni 1970...

Introduced the kids to Evita this weekend. I’ve always loved the music and the movie adaptation, but watching Argentina rock and roll into fascism hits a little different than it did in 1994. #evita #andrewlloydweber #musicals #fascism #antifascist #america #protest #resist #sowhathappensnow

A little birdy told me people enjoyed this ship, so I wanted to draw it. (I love these two already, so might as well!) Enjoy some Quiet Coal! ❀️🚫

Off to see #JesusChristSuperstar put on by a Catholic High School. It’ll be interesting to see how that shakes out.
