Sh*t. Remember when humans used tools exclusively? #AnimalToolUse #Animal

Archerfish are small tropical fish that spit jets of water to knock insects as high as 10 feet above the surface so they can eat them. Their mouths are described by biologists as being like tiny guns, and their aim is highly accurate, their brains taking refraction through the water surface into account when targeting prey, and is considered an example of animals using tools. Juveniles hunt in groups to learn how to aim better, but adults almost never miss the first shot. They're also a popular, though challenging, aquarium pet.

This insight into Senegal chimpanzees finding and exploiting hidden army ant nests is fascinating. It shows us how they plan, memorise and react to changing conditions 🧪🏺
Plus it comes with a cool graphic on how chimps in the Dindefelo community use tools to get the ants:
Some days the mirror is not your friend.
New #animaltooluse report by Jason Love et al. in @wilsonornithsoc.bsky.social. A Northern Cardinal repeatedly picked up gravel, flew to a car mirror and struck the mirror with the stone.
(It's a Ford Escape SUV, not clear if that mattered to the bird) 🧪🪶
Over on my blog I’ve done a short breakdown of the new report on wild bonobo water-scooping.
It’s such a nonchalant example of tool use - quirky things like this might happen a lot but without getting seen or recorded, or spreading through the user’s community.
