Reserved at the library after reading this post, arrived today, just in time for the weekend. My first Brookner.

...the girl possessed an unusual gift: she brought everyone to the brink of bad behaviour, simply by dint of behaving rather badly herself. One vied for her attention; one raised one's voice; one exaggerated one's own presence. However much one longed to maintain one's usual standards, within a few minutes - half an hour at the most - this was mysteriously n longer possible.

For #spinsterseptember I return to the wonderful writing of #AnitaBrookner with her third novel, Look At Me - more here! kaggsysbookishramblings.wordpress.com/2025/09/22/i...
My neighbour #AnitaBrookner the writer had brilliantly red hair - quite possibly chemically assisted - until her death at an advanced age

“The next morning, flat calm.”
WOW. The flat steel of this chapter opener.
I love when a book stops me dead. When it shakes me awake with a single sentence.

2nd shelf from the bottom is the (almost) complete #AnitaBrookner - and yes, that is also a framed photo of her on the bottom shelf. You do you, I’ll do me, ok?
A paperback copy of Leaving Home featuring a young woman in a red cardigan and a white Peter Pan collar
Finished Leaving Home and I admit I’m not as fond of #AnitaBrookner as some of y’all… Yes, her writing very elegant and her psychological insights spot-on but I don’t know… I don’t find her novels compelling
It’s my turn to choose a title for my Book Group & as this year we’ve decided to revisit old faves & classics as well as new novels, I’ve gone for #LookAtMe by the wonderful #AnitaBrookner a writer who seems to have fallen from fashion, but whose voice never fails to captivate me
