A speculative reconstruction of the head and neck of Polacanthus with cutaneous spikes drawn in 2015.

If cutaneous spikes were widespread in ornithischians, it'd make any ankylosaurs sporting them look even more dramatic. I suspect they were more so than we often depict them (see Spicomellus). Speculative doodle of the head and neck of Polacanthus from a 2015 sketchbook. #ankylosaurs #SciArt

Newly discovered #fossils have revealed the bizarre characteristics of #Spicomellusafer, the oldest of the herbivorous 4-legged #dinosaurs known as #Ankylosaurs. This 165-million-year-old ankylosaur was unlike any known dinosaur. Here's why:

Extreme armour in the world’s oldest ankylosaur - Nature The ankylosaurian dinosaur Spicomellus afer possessed a tail weapon and uniquely elaborate dermal armour.

The long spikes may have evolved as sexual signals to attract mates, but later #ankylosaurs might have evolved more functional reduced (less spikey) armor as predation risk increased. Check out the @nature.com paper from Maidment, @richardjbutler.bsky.social, et al.! www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Not a lot of screen time for #Ankylosaurs, #Velociraptor, and #Compsognathus. Since they're reptiles, it's likely that they had Pentastomids. A parasitic crustacean found in the respiratory tract of reptiles. Velociraptor had quill knobs on the head, so maybe a feather louse or two? (10/10)

The image depicts a colorful watercolor illustration of two dinosaurs. In the foreground, a large predatory dinosaur with dark blue scales and feathers, highlighted with yellow spots and stripes, faces away from the viewer. It has a muscular body and sharp, visible teeth. In the background, an ankylosaur with vibrant orange and purple armor-like plates, spines, and a clubbed tail crouches in a defensive stance.

One of my favorite pieces of #paleoart from one of my favorite modern artists- @levihastingsart.bsky.social! It's a wonderful reminder that no matter how big and intimidating a predator might have been, #ankylosaurs were on an entirely different level of "F- Around and Find Out."

Research indicates that the tail clubs on huge armored #dinosaurs known as #ankylosaurs may have evolved to whack each other rather than deter hungry predators. This is a complete shift from what was previously believed.
