I miss cons. They used to mentally recharge me to a 200% level, and get me super motivated. It's one of the few times I kinda felt like what I do matters. Downside of being perpetually online. The disconnect between screen and reality sometimes can just feel hollow.

So where's the weirdest place you got superglue stuck to? Usually people glue bits of their model to their fingers, but I got it on my teeth.

A niche brand I use is now offering affiliate programs. yay! more influencers getting free products they’ll over exaggerate their love for and then give away to their friends 🙃
I think masking in the Instagram gunpla painting community has become a bit of a dick measuring contest. A badge of pride. If you wanna impress me, do it in the least number of pieces of tape, not the most.
“I really hope that IPMS related stuff dies and gets replaced by newer organizations, its honestly just pathetic how strict and old-fashioned all of those groups are..”
Just wanna say how cringe and capitalistic the instagram hobby scene has become. Either aesthetic unboxings or pushing sponsored products, or just doing aesthetic reels of finished products. Miss the old scene where people show genuine WIP and discussions, and not just something that looks nice for engagement and followers :(

Like a year ago I discovered a bunch of hate in the Instagram gunpla community and that killed my joy in sharing my work. At the same time, work really got intense and I don’t have much time to build anymore. Building and everything around it are just like a source of guilt and toxicity and it really sucks to have that happen to something I used to love. Maybe I’ll find the joy again someday.

I wish there’s a comprehensive list of bad stores/ influencers / scammers out there. New to the hobby and when I told people where I got things from / what tools I use / who I watch the comments I got are like “Oh that content creator is a scammer” or “that company got into scandal” and all that and it made me feel ignorant af. Maybe someone in here can englighten me in the comments. Or make a list so other newbies don’t get roped into buying stuff from unethical people or businesses…
I’ve been running a side forum for non Gunpla stuff and I’m finding the community of that niche more helpful and non influencer-driven. It’s still a very very niche group so maybe it’s a long way from capitalism taking over. It makes me wonder if my recent Gunpla burnout is community-driven and not so much me falling out of love with the process of making Gunpla / scale modelling. It also makes me miss the old days of people exchanging genuine ideas from forums.
Pages that almost exclusively share other artists work, while advertising their own affiliate marketing link or commission service, gives me the serious ick. I don’t care if you credit the artist at all, frankly, when all of the calls to action point to you.

Most hobby businesses are okay as long as they don't, ya know, use genocide as promotional material for art books (Ak interactive) or owe people massive amounts of money
Hobby confession #650-#653

Hobby stores that rule communities should be shunned. Running pages in the guise of “community” but banning anyone who doesn’t buy exclusively from them is messed up. Asking the community to run events for them for free while they make profit is even worse.
As I said in a comment on another page, AI IS THEFT. People are still trying to justify using AI eg using it as a "tool" etc. AI *HAD* its chance to be ethical and used for good things but it is NOT being used as such, which is why it is NOT GOOD. People need to get that shit through their heads. AI requires running actual artists’ work through its programming in order to even generate its “art”. This is THEFT and no I will not be debating no fucking body.
Nothing is more icky than people who shovel money out to IG for exposure and likes. Its like their wallet gets them farther than their actual skills and its really sad. Too many people lack the ability to simply enjoy the hobby and mostly enjoy the attention.

I went to a local IPMS/ Gunpla comp event a few months back and finally met some builders, but disappointed that their instagram pics of their kits are heavily photoshopped and looked nothing like their models in real life. Your works are already good... why photoshop it so much and add filters? How insecure are you guys really?
Hobby confession #645
#anonhobbyconfessions
some of yalls backlog disgust me. u do not need 100+ unbuilt kits.
I don't care how many someone has. It just makes me wonder what's going to happen if there's an emergency? Like, I feel nervous having ten kits in the backlog.
I met someone at a flea market who was struggling to sell 200+ models their dad had.

I know its for aesthetics and algorithms but can ppl stop photoshopping their builds so much and adding a ton of filters? Just makes your builds look weird and oversaturated
Resin kits can turn some of the nicest gunpla into overdesigned, pointy messes and are not the pinnacle of the hobby.

I don’t like influencer marketing at all. People should purchase a product on its merit, not because some niche influencer is pushing the products and overpromising on its benefits. All I see from this is people who don’t really care about a brand acting like it’s AMAZING just for profit after receiving free products.
Gunpla in a bag is the non-living version of those fish in a pouch Keychains.

I’m really tired of seeing “influencers” take advantage of a supportive hobby community. Flaunting free stuff they received but will never use and then selling it on eBay, pay to join discords, patreons without content. I don’t know why we’re going along with it.

I paid a really spectacular commission painter to do a 40k mini for me. They went above and beyond. I entered it into a painting contest and won...it was a GW employee contest. Yes, I was a GW employee.
I'm getting increasingly frustrated with this page. The off-topic posts and articles are uninteresting, and the featured opinions are extremely negative. I might unfollow soon
See, this is why I have trust issues with competitions. We got people with workshops that employ people to build gundams and enter them into comps. AI in comps. Can't trust shit

I find it annoying when people post pics of their gunpla haul and asks “is this a good build” or “please give tips on how to build”. Why not just follow the darn manual and enjoy the freakin process?? I get that you want a flawless build. But cmon, its all part of the process! I’m not sure if these people are just straight up clueless or they just want to flex or post something Is it just the Philippine gunpla community, or does this happen in other countries as well?

Saying you’re doing something for the hobby community then getting them to run it, use their time and energy for free but then take the credit cause you “financially supported” it with store credit that took 0 effort? Gtfo.

Dear gundam store owner, me buying an item (that you don't stock) from somewhere else is not "stealing". You big doofus. (Guy thought it counted as robbing him of "the opportunity of the sale"... despite not selling it. Owning a business makes some people crazy.)
Some people need to understand that what they want to pay for a kit doesn’t exactly line up with what’s realistic for a store to charge, especially a physical location compared to an online one.

A large portion hobbyist needs to learn not to make impulse buys based on emotions.
I buy kits and tools on credit to keep up with my friendship group and not left out on new releases and discussions. My backlog of stuff is now super big and gives me anxiety. I wonder how many of us are also doing the same thing to keep up the persona. It’s becoming an addiction to buy new releases and I find it hard to stop

Another influencer tidbit: I feel gross whenever I see a gunpla shop or a dropship "manufacturer" sponsor a builder. It's so predatory how it works out - these builders are being shackled to a brand/shop/whatever that robs them of their passion, creativity, and flexibility to try new things, and they don't even know it...
I work for one “maker” / “builder” who has a workshop and does major commissions. Not everything is as it seems. They have staff doing priming, base coat, and sometimes painting and decal work. Some staff even did everything but the front facing person claimed as their own. Social media is a lie. Don’t beholden yourself to their “always grinding” mentality and output
I see a lots of confessions talking about IMPS, and i don't know what it mean, and at this point i'm to affraid to ask

IPMS is the International Plastic Modelers' Society. People either love their local chapters or don't. I've had great experiences going to events, but I do know it can be "old man yells at sky" about gunpla. Depends on your community

Hobby confession #623

the way people will just parrot youtuber opinions without doing any thinking on their own makes for such hollow interactions at build days. yes yes, we all know what certain content creators think about early RGs or certain HGs/MGs. listening to people complain about the fact that gunpla are model kits at the end of the day is exhausting and having to listen to unoriginal, thoughtless criticisms (mg unicorn bad, rg zeta hand grenade for example) is even worse. do some thinking without the tiktokers/youtubers in your ear.
