Unripened (green) and under-ripened (light orange) berries set directly in the stem of Myrmephytum selebicum plant.
Icy-blue flower with fleshy, angular petals emerging from a stem.
Ripe, deep orange berries of Myrmephytum selebicum. Light tan seeds can be seen through the thin skin near the base of each fruit.
Myrmephytum selebicum, one of many Rubiaceous (belonging to the coffee/madder family) ant-hosting plants, produces icy blue flowers that develop into orange berries. The seeds are easy to germinate on long-fiber sphagnum, and ants are not necessary for successful growth.
