An herbarium specimen of Palicourea atlántica C. M. Taylor & J. G. Jardim, with a det label with my name on the bottom and the plant family name Campanulaceae crossed out and replaced with Rubiaceae on top. The plant itself has huge opposite leaves that are shiny on top and pale below, only the secondary veins visible. There’s an inflorescence with large (for Palicourea) buds, which we know from the label are whitish blue with dark blue lobes.
A #botany achievement: I determined my first #Palicourea #Rubiaceae specimen to species- P. atlantica!! But my collaborator and coffee family mentor Charlotte Taylor’s name still made it to the label, since she is an author of the species.
May not seem like much, but feels like a big deal to me! 🤓

Stiles also hypothesized that a “preripening” fruit color is a signal that fruits will be ripe soon. Lots of fruits, like these Rubus sp., pass through a 2nd color as they ripen from green to their final color. The red color says, “Coming Soon.” #dispersal #Rubiaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

A tiny wind pollinated flower a few millimetres long. It has a rounded green ovary, a dark reddish tubular corolla about 1/2 a millimetre long, and two stigmas that are 2 millimetres long. There are pollen grains on the stigmas, but I know of no males nearby.
I had to look very closely, but a twiggy Coprosma (family #Rubiaceae) plant in the garden is in full flower. It's a female and here's a flower.

Linnaeus, father of scientific names of organisms, could be mean to opponents of his work. We found an example in #Rubiaceae: Anthospermum L., an insulting name for an African plant. Giulio Pontedera confused flower buds with fruits and seeds with anthers. The name “floral seed” stresses this error.

#Spring is here, weeds are here. Galium aparine says whaddup. While this plant is very #weedy, some may say #noxious, but it has some great benefits. In the #Rubiaceae family, the seeds can be roasted for a coffee substitute or the dried leaves can be made into a tea to help with lymph nodes. ✌️
