Virginia Apgar (1909-1974) was an American anesthesiologist and medical researcher. She earned her M.D. from Columbia in 1933 and became one of its first female professors. Initially specializing in surgery, she shifted to anesthesiology. In 1952, she introduced the Apgar Score, a simple but effective system based on five criteria: Appearance, Pulse, Grimace, Activity, and Respiration. It quickly became a global standard, drastically improving neonatal care. Apgar also promoted Rh testing to identify women at risk of transmitting maternal antibodies that could destroy fetal red blood cells, causing fetal hydrops or miscarriage. During the 1964-65 rubella pandemic, she advocated for universal vaccination to prevent mother-to-child transmission, which caused thousands of congenital rubella cases, miscarriages, and infant deaths. Later, she earned a master's in public health from Johns Hopkins. Apgar's work revolutionized newborn care, and she received numerous honors.

#HeadstrongProfile day 6: Virginia Apgar (1909-1974) is responsible for saving a lot of babies lives by developing the #ApgarScore for when babies are initially delivered. Data collected provided clues into what may have gone wrong in delivery and medical professionals were able to adjust as needed.
