The sculpture depicts a soldier wearing his active service equipment and helping a comrade who has been wounded, by giving him a drink from his water bottle. The theme of the sculpture, with its focus on healing rather than war, is appropriate for a village devoted to the resettlement of wounded soldiers. The base of the cast is made to resemble rocky ground and there is a fragment of a cartwheel to the left hand side, with Ms Delahunt’s signature
She exhibited works at the Royal Academy in London between 1908 and 1919 and also showed works at Liverpool and Manchester, where she was elected an associate member of the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts.
Jennie H Delahunt (April 1877–1954) was an English sculptor and teacher.
Her best known work is the war memorial at the centre of the Westfield War Memorial Village in Lancaster
