A Sheepstealer Apprehended Information was received at the Newport station-house this week, brought by a Somerset constable, that a sheepstealer, named Sweeting, from West Hatch and having eluded their vigilance for some time, was supposed to be working on the South Wales line, near Magor ; and sheep having been stolen from the neighbourhood very recently, the superintendent deemed it advisable to send PC Williams off at once, with the Somerset constable, in search of Sweeting, who was captured on Tuesday, by the Newport officer, in the midst of a large gang of his fellow navvies, drinking in a beer-house, in Magor.

Air Piracy Case Is Lost Zenith Concern Wins Against Government in Suit (By The Associated Press.) CHICAGO, Ill., April 16,.—The government lost its first air piracy case today when Federal Judge James H. Wilkerson found for the defendant, the Zenith Radio corporation, and its president, K. F. McDonald Jr., who had been accused of violating the wireless act of 1912. The court held that sections one and two of the wireless law were ambiguous and could not apply in the present action, and that congress did not empower the secretary of commerce with certain discretionary powers which he had assumed. Car Hits Tree Contractor Arthur G. White has learned that a tree can be more damaging to an automobile than an express train. A short while ago he was struck by an express train and his car was somewhat damaged, while he escaped injury. Tuesday morning the same Essex, which was struck by the train, collided with a tree at the intersection of the Freehold and the West Farms road and was damaged more than by the train.

Uncle of President Fails to Qualify in Lewiston Fiddlers Lewiston, Me., April 7 —(AP)— "Uncle John" Wilder of Plymouth, Vt., uncle of President Coolidge, was given an ovation when he appeared as a contestant in the world-wide fiddlers' contest at the Armory tonight. He played the time limit, but failed to qualify for the finals. This honor was won by John McKenney of Lewiston, who wore a flannel shirt and bow and was more of the Mellie Dunham type.

He marched from Benares with a troop and battery of Royal artillery. a wing of H. M.'s 10th and H. M.'s 37th and 17th. Having twice gained brilliant victories over the enemy, he marched on the 10th to Chanda, a village about 12 miles from Chegra Mhow.

April 6, 1863 – The Fight at Somerset, Ky. New York, April 4. —A letter to the Cincinnati Gazette, gives some particulars of the recent fight near Somerset, Ky. The rebels were overtaken four miles north of Somerset. Gen. Carter in command of eight hundred mounted men, had reached Buck Creek, when Gen. Gilmore, with his body guard, and the seventh Ohio cavalry reached him, increasing our force to twelve hundred.

April 2, 1863 – Fractional Color The Adjutant-General of the Confederate States has decided that men who have any portion of white blood in their veins are subject to conscription. The logic of slavery is an extremely flexible and accommodating thing. Under the slave code the smallest per centage of African blood is sufficient to doom its possessor to bondage, and deprive him of every attribute and right of humanity ; but, under the war code, the smallest fraction of European blood puts its possessor under obligation to fight the battles of slavery.

Between the hours of 5 and 6 o'clock this afternoon, a mob of twelve or fifteen Copperheads, thoroughly saturated with secesh whisky, rushed to the storehouse of Mr. L. F. Fehren, and demanded of the clerks to come out, swearing if they did not, they would break down the door and murder them in their tracks.
