Estos cinturones son tan densos que casi ocultan por completo el núcleo de la galaxia en luz visible. ¿Qué intentan decirnos estos terrícolas? El mensaje presentado fue enviado desde la Tierra hacia el cúmulo estelar globular M13 en 1974. Durante la inauguración de una mejora en el Observatorio de Arecibo, que en ese momento era el radiotelescopio único más grande del mundo, se transmitió una cadena de unos y ceros que representan este diagrama. Este intento de comunicación extraterrestre fue más ceremonial, ya que la humanidad regularmente transmite señales de radio y televisión hacia el espacio de manera accidental. Aunque este mensaje fuera recibido, M13 está tan lejos que deberíamos esperar casi 50,000 años para escuchar una respuesta. El mensaje contiene algunos datos sencillos sobre la humanidad y su conocimiento: de izquierda a derecha se muestran números del uno al diez, átomos como hidrógeno y carbono, algunas moléculas interesantes, ADN, un ser humano con su descripción, los conceptos básicos de nuestro Sistema Solar y aspectos básicos del telescopio emisor.
