Together with my colleague @grandpre.bsky.social, I looked into what the use of #Article6 credits could mean for the EU and Germany’s 2040 climate targets. Turns out, this could significantly increase domestic emissions.

Integrity, transparency, accountability and inclusivity After the finalization of the rulebook on Article 6 of the Paris Agreement at COP29 in Baku, international negotiations have shifted from the development of rules towards providing further guidance on implementation. Integrity, transparency, accountability and inclusivity were key areas addressed in decisions on Article 6.4 and Article 6.2. A further milestone was the closure of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) which will cease its operations in a staged approach over the next two years.

Equally concerning are Norway's stated plans to rely on international carbon markets, purchasing carbon credits under the Paris Agreement's #Article6 mechanisms – “if deemed necessary” – to achieve the target.
The lack of specificity about what's “necessary” makes these plans difficult to evaluate

The USA should be expelled from the UN. They voted in favor of this. If anyone is still under the pretense that those of us that live here are living under a freedom loving democratic society, I have news for them. Our country has always been the bad guys.

Oxford Principles for Responsible Engagement with Article 6 | oeko.de Article 6 is the backbone of international carbon trading under the Paris Agreement. If utilised responsibly, Article 6 could be one of the greatest opportunities to drive additional climate mitigation and improve climate resilience. However, evidence so far shows that this potential is at risk, and the framework could instead enable the ‘greenwashing’ of climate commitments by countries and corporate entities alike. The new ‘Oxford Principles for Article 6’ – developed by a wide range of academics from Oxford and beyond – provide essential guidance and guardrails to enable this international framework to be used in a responsible manner. The goal of the Principles is to foster international carbon markets that drive genuine climate action and provide incentives to enhance ambition as opposed to serving as a smokescreen for inaction.
