Once a year during our Life is Beautiful festival (which is tragically in jeopardy, having been acquired by Rolling Stone in 2022 and is cancelled for 2025), artists pain massive murals on buildings downtown. I've taken hundreds upon hundreds of photos there using a Canon Rebel, both for the quality it affords and because it makes me look less like a tourist (I tell myself) -- a crucial distinction for locals. This photo depicts two murals on the front of the building and a massive one on the side, which is a black and white illustration of a woman's face, her wide open eyes being the only really clear part, as the rest is designed to incorporate the faded black brick under white peeling paint, rendering her cheeks, jaw, and mouth largely eroded. The other visible wall has two murals side by side that are more abstract and difficult to make out; on the left is a vibrant cacophony of color dominated by pink, red and blue-green with lots of angled lines and what appears to be a pair of blue-green hands with long, bumpy fingers. The righthand mural is blacked out save for a few isolated eyeballs floating in space. In the background rising up several stories above, you can see the El Cortez hotel. In the series this photo comes from, I edited the colors, contrast, etc of the original photo until they were gloomy save for the spots of highly saturated shouts of color. I then cropped out the sky to sub in a section of sky from a photo taken out in the desert. This sky was edited to be a dark, stormy, highly saturated dark blue with streaks of yellowy clouds. The cut around the building is extremely sharp, and the sky is out of proportion so that it looms massive over top. I credit and tag artists when I can but unfortunately none of these had names that I could make out / identify via search. #art #vegas #lasvegas #mural #murals #artsdistrict #photoshop #photography #digitalart #digitalphotography
