Also, because no one voted for Arx Fatalis, that game has bumped up on my list, because I think more people should know about it. It's really good! I think a major reason it's not so well known is that it was released too close to both Morrowind and NWN.

Arx Fatalis PC video game screenshot. Shadow beast/dog jumps in through a hole behind the player, initiating an escape sequence, as the beast single-handedly wiped out the dwarf settlement and cannot be defeated by regular combat.
Once deeper levels became available, I descended to the lowest one to investigate what happened to the dwarves. Conclusion: a very hungry, angry shadow dog.
