Today (nearly a week after #asecs22) I’m tackling my post-conference to-dos:
Emails (yes even though we’re on Twitter)
- @R_A_Barr - Grandison
- @zugenia & Manu - Fanfic
- @insurrect_histo - @18thConnect
Writing:
- @LARBBooks-style #KOllOK piece to @SheriMariePhD & @PhDeezus
And welcome, any and all #asecs22 nerds I managed to con into joining us! I'm flying solo otherwise tonight, as administrivia has felled TheatreProf and @emnk is still recovering from our 18th century nerd conference (complete with valiant attempts at #ExU screening).
Also: #asecs22 folks who were talking #BridgertonNetflix (and those who couldn’t come and are looking for remote options for sharing/nerding), note that the deadline for @virtualjanecon is next week. Happy to talk about @emnk & my experience, & follow them for info!
#asecs22: a thread.
Context: ASECS 2020 was the 1st conference cancelled, 21 was entirely online. We returned to so much unspoken loss: deaths of elders, others staying away, visas denied, & so many who have left the profession. And yet, no space to mourn.
OK, #asecs22 attendees, here's a reflective challenge for you: what of this conference was NECESSARY to do in person?
(those of you in other fields can answer this as well, of course)
#asecs22 colleague notes:
- if you’ve followed me during the conference & I haven’t followed back, please reply here!
- I’m very glad to make virtual coffee dates with folks who want to talk @18thConnect #ttrpg or other stuff. Email me for my Calendly.

Great point by @jhmerritt3 @ASECS_DH Roundtable: topic modeling privileges large quantities within the collection, but critical recovery almost always tends to focus on small and marginalized traces within the archive. How do we bridge this gap? #asecs2022 #asecs22
I have reached the status in ASECS where people think I’m too (busy/important/etc) to bother and I assure you I am not.
We’re all just dorks who don’t know how to human (and didn’t before).

This morning at #ASECS22 — another 8 AM start for me, bring together folks interested in creating a Poly edition of Richardson’s final, weirdest novel (and #Austen fave), SIR CHARLES GRANDISON. Since I’m waiting for caffeine to kick in, let me tell you what I mean.

#ASECS22 #asecs2022 @jmjafrx responding to @BlkLibraryGirl Poetry reading: The Age of Phillis is not of a bygone era, but just beneath the surface of our world. … what is after the Enlightenment: slavery, colonialism, … but also poetry
Now @jmjafrx responds #asecs2022 #ASECS22. You can read more of her work in Wicked Flesh: Black Women, Intimacy, and Freedom in the Atlantic World https://www.upenn.edu/pennpress/book/16139.html
Hurray for @kerry_sinanan and @carrideen !! #ASECS22
And now Sylvia Wynter's Eighteenth Century here at #ASECS22 ! Big room, full up.
And now Pedagogy Roundtable: The Indigenous Eighteenth Century! #asecs22 — @londonmikmaq nobly pinch-hitting for organizer Mary Helen McMurran.
Shoutout by Emily West at Crip Time/Crip Forms panel to @KleinUla’s discussion of “bosom friendships” in Belinda (which you can read @ABOwomeninarts: it’s #openaccess ) #ASECS22 #ASECS2022 https://digitalcommons.usf.edu/abo/vol3/iss2/1/
After an amazing @ASECSWomen business meeting, I’m now at the Roundtable: Crip Time/Crip Forms (Disabilities Caucus). First up @travisclau on chronic illness & beauty in women’s smallpox poems. #asecs2022 #asecs22
Oh, and a note: I only unmask to smile next to my friend’s books when the exhibit is nearly empty. We are all vaxxed, masked, & doing the best we can for one another. #ASECS22
Apparently I’m just… waking up at 6 AM while at #ASECS22 without trying. But at least it means I’ll be caffeinated for talking about peer review for #dh projects with @18thConnect for @asecsgrad (Key 3)
Performance to get a bartender’s attention — was unprepared for my ExU watching to feel like #ASECS22 #CriticalRoleSpoilers
