The basilica, which was begun in 1228, is built into the side of a hill and comprises two churches (known as the Upper Church and the Lower Church) and a crypt, where the remains of the saint are interred. The interior of the Upper Church is an important early example of the Gothic style in Italy. It is set against a perfect blue sky at the top of a hill with bushes and trees lining the winding road up to it. In the foreground, a field is covered by corn coloured something or other, although I do know that this is part of the ancient farm, now hotel, where they still grow their own produce.

Basilica of Saint Francis of #Assisi, named for him although his real name was Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone, but his father nicknamed him Francesco (meaning "Frenchman") because he was in France on business when he was born.
