“I told you to let it go!” “Wilred! Hey!” Holle grabbed his shoulder, and Wilred shrugged him off, looking the other way. “Really? You pull that shit and now you won’t even talk to me?” “I just don’t see what the problem is.” His shrug was sullen, almost pouting. “He bothered you, and I told him not to do it again.” “But he didn’t bother me! He asked me a harmless fucking question, and you had to go and be an ass about it, even though I asked you not to. I asked you to leave him alone!” “And I didn’t. So what?” “So- So what?” Holle bit back a snarl of frustration, his tail lashing behind him. “You embarrassed me, that’s what! What am I supposed to do the next time I fight him, huh?” “Maybe he should have thought about that before he asked you out!” Holle closed his eyes and took a shaking breath, trying to rein in the frustration that had been building inside him for months. He tried, and he failed. “And maybe I should have said yes!” Wilred stared at him in shock. “What?”
Holle sank down to sit on the edge of the bed, feeling oddly defeated by how freeing it had been to say that. “Maybe I should have said yes. Maybe this was a mistake.” “Holle…” Wilred stood and closed the distance between them, setting a hand on his shoulder. He batted his hand away and repeated, with more conviction this time, “This was a mistake. I knew it. I knew it was, but I never could tell you no.” Wilred reached for him again, and he jerked away. When he tried a third time, Holle snapped. “Don’t touch me!” He hated saying it, hated that he had to say it, hated all of this. “You never fucking listen. When did you stop listening? Why?” “Holle, please.” This time, at least, he didn’t reach again, holding up his hands in entreaty. “Please what? Let you micromanage my life? Tell me who I can talk to? What jobs I can take? Or should we cut to where you tell me you’re sorry and you won’t do it again, except you will do it again because you always do, because you don’t trust me! Why can’t you just fucking trust me?!” Wilred opened his mouth to respond, and Holle cut him off with acid, knowing exactly what he was about to say. “Don’t you even. We broke up.”
“But you still should have-” “Come crawling back to you for help because I went into a shed? Absolutely fucking not. The only thing I did that I shouldn’t have done was agree to try again.” “Holle, you don’t mean that.” “Yeah, I do. I really do.” Holle felt a strange sort of peace settle over him as he finally said it, in spite of the tears running down his face. “Get out, Wilred.” “Holle, come on-” “Get out. Go crash with Rory, or something. And when we get home, get your shit and leave.” His name had barely left Wilred’s lips again when he fixed him with an icy glare, both daring and threatening him to try. He watched as Wilred weighed his options, and realized that there was no winning this fight. Not right now, at least: Holle knew full well, from prior experience and the stubborn set of his jaw, that for his oldest friend, his first love - and oh, he loved him still, he did, it had just all gone wrong somehow now that they weren’t kids anymore - this wasn’t over. But it was. It was.

Sila, a raen au ra, stands somewhere in Occult Crescent. The sky is shades of pink and orange. There is stonework and grassland and foliage in the background and in the distance. There are bubbles that float in the air. Sila stands in the center of a gazebo and holds her hand up in the air towards some smaller bubbles that float there. She wears a white dress with black gloves and gold embellishments.

Holle sat on the edge of the bed and huffed out a breath, gathering himself to stand. That it still took effort was endlessly frustrating, but it was a consequence of his own choices, as no few would be quick to remind him if he complained. As far as he was concerned, he’d done what needed to be done, and had objectively been the best choice to do it, but not everyone agreed with his assessment. Turned out people had very strong feelings when you did something that almost killed you. The reasoning didn’t matter so much. Holle sighed and looked across the room, where the remains of his rapier lay on a side table. The focus was shattered, and the blade broken in two by Zenos’ scythe; the same people unhappy with his choices would likely have been very happy to remind him that he was lucky it wasn’t him. It wasn’t, he was in fact alive and in one piece, but he wasn’t going to be living this one down anytime soon. A knock pulled his gaze to the door, and he was surprised when the door didn’t immediately swing open, meaning the knock wasn’t simply an announcement of arrival, and thus not Aymeric or Haurchefant. Which meant he had a visitor, but not someone they’d felt a need to forewarn him about. Family, then. “Come in.”
Holle was relieved to see his father’s characteristic red coat; the other leading contender had been his mother or his cousin, who tended to fuss at him more than he would like. X’rhun, though, understood, on the deepest of levels, and had yet to express any amount of frustration with him. There was no judgement, no resentment, no asking him why or how could he or how dare he, just understanding. Acceptance. There was concern, and there was love, but without any of the sharp edges of guilt. He knew the son he’d raised, and how he’d raised him. “How are you feeling?” Holle shrugged, but admitted, “Tired. Whether I do anything or not. Just…tired.” X’rhun laid a hand on the back of his neck, and Holle leaned into him; his father and mentor had long been allowed proximity most were not, and his touch was still a comfort. “That’s to be expected, though I know that doesn’t make it any less frustrating.” Fingers brushed through his hair, longer than usual and in need of cutting, and scratched gently at his scalp. “Don’t rush. You’ll get there.”
“I know. I just…” Holle sighed. “I hate not being able to do anything. That everyone has to take care of me.” X’rhun laughed. “Well, if it makes you feel any better, I don’t think they’re going to get tired of it anytime soon.” He certainly wasn’t wrong, and while Holle might worry about being an imposition, neither Aymeric nor Haurchefant had ever given any indication that he was; on the contrary, this was the most time he’d spent with Aymeric, well, ever, and Haurchefant would take any excuse he could find to carry him. Holle had yet to climb the stairs on his own two feet since he’d woken up more than a month ago. On the rare occasion he managed to get down said stairs before being noticed, neither were thrilled with him. “Here.” X’rhun set a long, wrapped object in his lap; he must have carried it in with him, but Holle hadn’t paid enough attention to notice it. “I thought this might cheer you up.”
Holle looked at him in question, but receiving no answer, set to carefully unwinding the old, plain cloth - this had been wrapped for storage, not as a gift, and for some years, by the look of it. And once he saw what it was, he laughed. “I can’t believe you kept this.” “And why wouldn’t I?” X’rhun ruffled his hair, smiling as he watched him marvel over something Holle had long forgotten about: his first proper rapier and focus. “I wouldn’t recommend fighting any primals with it, but once you’re feeling up to a little more exercise, it should serve well enough.” Holle looked off to the side for a moment, blinking away the tears that threatened to form. “Thanks, dad.” “Just no backflips yet, hm?”

Post-EW, a recovering Holle gets a visit - and a present - from a certain catdad.

On the table, Holle’s phone vibrated, and he reached to swipe away the reminder before heading to the fridge to grab one of the only things it contained and twist open the bottle of ostensibly-chocolate meal replacement. He missed the face that Hien made, but he heard it well enough. “I take it we need groceries.” Holle, pausing after having knocked back half the bottle, shrugged. “If you want real food, probably? I’m all set.” Hien came to observe the contents of the fridge himself, and that face, Holle did see. “Kami, is fencing really that strict? Please tell me you’re not just living on this stuff.” “I mean, sort of? I don’t eat as much as I should, but at least this way I get most of what I need.” Realization dawned, and it was easy to read that Hien was horrified - at himself. “Shit, man, I’m sorry. I didn’t realize…”
“It’s alright. It’s not like you’re psychic or something.” Holle sat at the tiny prefab kitchen table and drummed his fingers against the side of the half-empty bottle of nutrient drink. “I can eat, by the way, I do, I just… I don’t get hungry, so I forget. At least if I’ve got these around I’m not making myself sick, you know?” “I’m not, but I shouldn’t have assumed, and you didn’t owe me an explanation. I’m sorry.” “It’s fine, really. We’re going to be living together, it was bound to come up.” He shrugged. “At least you don’t have to worry about me stealing your food.” “And you don’t have to worry about me stealing yours - no offense.” “None taken. Trust me, if anyone knows how awful they are, it’s me.” “Honestly? You ever want to steal my food, please. Do it. I’ll even make extra just in case.”

Holle fidgeted outside the doors of the Kienkan, knowing that Hien was a busy man, and that simply appearing without warning was a gamble. He could hardly expect him to abandon a day’s worth of responsibilities just because a friend showed up to visit, no matter how close they were. Then again, this was Hien, and so it wasn’t long at all before he burst through the doors into the open air of the Enclave with the warmest of smiles and swept him into a hug. Holle buried his face in the fur trim of Hien’s robe and closed his eyes, tail curling in contentment as his nerves bled away. It was Hien who had helped him to re-learn an appreciation for physical affection, as well as how to trust, how to express himself, how to let himself just be, and even all this time later, his mere presence was calming, his embrace safety. Too soon for Holle, however, he’d pulled back, holding him at arm’s length to look him over. It was a look Holle had gotten used to over the last several months; it turned out that when you’d nearly died, people tended to be concerned for you. Hien touched his cheek and smiled. “You’re looking better and better, my friend. The aetheryte didn’t take too much out of you, I hope?”
Of course he would remember that aetheryte travel tended to tire him more than most, with his aether leaning out of balance even on good days. Holle shook his head. “No, it’s alright.” It was hard to be tired with Hien smiling at him. “I’m sorry to just show up like this, I- If you’re busy, I can wait.” “Nonsense! I always have time for you.” Hien threw an arm around his shoulders, and Holle was enveloped in his unique warmth once again. “Come, walk with me?” ___________ Settled comfortably on his knees, Holle considered the table before them, covered in empty and half-empty plates and bowls, many of which had held his favorite foods - which Hien had remembered, somehow, though it had been well over a year since they’d travelled together. He rarely ate so much in one sitting, and now, between that, his travel earlier in the day, and the pleasant sound of Hien’s voice as he chatted away, it would have been easy to drift off. They were sitting just close enough that the temptation to lean over and fall asleep was very real, and he knew that Hien would let him.
But he wasn’t here just to visit, and he needed to stop putting it off. He took a deep, quiet breath to steady himself, and prepared to wait for a lull in Hien’s tale…but he didn’t need to. The moment his posture changed, Hien saw it. “Is everything alright, my friend?" Caught - though it shouldn’t have come as a surprise - Holle ducked his head. “Yeah, of course, everything’s fine.” When he received a skeptical look, he continued, “I just… Can we talk?” He heard Hien shift to face him, and felt a hand on his shoulder, though the weight of it seemed greater than before. Now that the moment was here, even Hien couldn’t chase away his anxiety over what he meant to say. “Of course. Is everything alright?” Holle nodded, knowing his was the sort of request bound to cause concern: especially coming from him. Though it was difficult to do so, he moved to face Hien in turn, even if he couldn’t quite meet his eyes. He might have helped make it possible for him to express himself, but that didn’t necessarily make it easy. “I never… I never thanked you properly, for what you did for me.” “Holle, you don’t-”
Holle interrupted him with a shake of his head. “You did more for me than I ever could have asked. That anyone would do that for me, I…” Still staring down at his own hands, and resisting the urge to reach for Hien’s, he tried to gather his words. “I- I needed so much, and you… You made it okay.” “And I know I didn’t make it easy, I know I…I was stubborn, and I was afraid, but you were always so patient with me.” Even when he’d snapped at him, even when he hadn’t been able to bring himself to voice what he wanted, or fully admit to what was wrong. There were so many things he’d never told him, or had only been willing to give tiny pieces of. And Hien had never, ever pushed him any farther than he’d absolutely had to. “I was safe with you, and I… I hadn’t felt safe in a long time.” “Oh, Holle…” Hien pulled him to him, and Holle allowed it, letting himself stop for a moment and be grounded by the embrace. “It wasn’t half as much an imposition as you’ve made yourself believe it was, but even if it were? I still would have done it, and gladly.” “I know. I know. You…” Because Hien was good, because all that had mattered to him was that someone needed his help, whatever that help was. “Hien, I…”

“Haurchefant.” A strong hand gripped his shoulder, and Haurchefant looked up from where he sat only to look away, guilt-stricken. “Aymeric. I’m sorry, I- I should have been there, I-” The hand on his shoulder became a hand on the back of his neck, long fingers lacing through his hair as his old friend pulled him to him. Haurchefant sagged into him in spite of himself, a sob clawing its way out of his throat. Aymeric stroked a hand over his head, offering comfort he didn’t deserve. “Haurchefant. It’s not your fault.” “But I should have stopped him, I-” he was cut off when Aymeric stepped back just enough to tip Haurchefant’s face upwards, forcing him to look at him, and shook his head. “How? Hmm? They told me what happened. None of you could have stopped it.” “But-”
“Enough.” Aymeric pressed his thumb over his lips, quieting him. “I know it’s easier to blame yourself. I know. But don’t. Please.” He closed his eyes and breathed out a shaky sigh, a wordless surrender, and Aymeric returned stroking his hair. Though he dreaded the answer, Haurchefant asked, “How is he?” Now it was Aymeric who sighed, and he dropped into the chair beside him, every line of his body exhaustion, and shook his head. “It’s bad, Haurche. He…” A deep breath as he tried to steady his voice. To steady himself. “They just don’t know.” Haurchefant leaned into his friend, wrapping an arm around him. “He’ll fight. You know he will.”
“Haurche, he’s so-” Aymeric broke off into a sob, and Haurchefant pulled him closer. “I know.” So small, and so broken. He’d weighed nothing in his arms, bloodied and lifeless; it had felt like holding a dead bird in his hands, and just as hopeless. “I know.” “I don’t know what to do.” Hearing Aymeric’s despair was like hearing himself. He leaned his head against his and closed his eyes. “Trust him. That’s all we can do.”

Holle squinted as the canopy above him thinned, the comforting shade of Rak’tika giving way to the bright light of Lakeland. Though he knew there was no more Light here than in the Greatwood or anywhere else, it still felt worse somehow. He felt worse. Here, there were far fewer dark places to hide. The way the light shone off the Crystarium and the tower at its heart was little help, and he scowled into the distance where it stood. He’d been of half a mind to ignore the Exarch’s summons entirely, but curiosity had gotten the better of annoyance. Holle had made it quite clear that he wanted to be left the fuck alone, after all, and thus far the Exarch had respected his boundaries. Had he finally managed to fetch Anah instead of yet another unsuspecting Scion? Holle still didn’t understand why he was so adamant on Anah for whatever it was that he needed, or why he refused to explain it until she arrived. Or why Urianger insisted on pretending he didn’t know anything, either, when he clearly did. He could tell by the way he looked at him - or rather, by the way he didn’t. That his friend was keeping secrets, again, had driven a wedge between them. Holle hadn’t seen him in weeks, and that was fine by him.
A sudden sharp itch deepened his scowl, and he rubbed his arm, reminding himself not to scratch. The itching had grown more and more persistent, but it didn’t feel like a shed. There was no fever, no restlessness, no need: just the itch as his scales dried out and flaked and threatened to crack in spite of regular, meticulous care. He had his suspicions, but kept them to himself. After all, it wasn’t as though he was on speaking terms with his best friend. He spent the entire long walk brooding and uncomfortable and missing his coeurl, Khasarmaa, until finally he arrived at the Crystarium, glinting in the relentless light. He huffed and trudged his way through the gates, raising a hand to greet the guards, and started toward the Ocular. “Holle!” He’d scarcely made it past the aetheryte when a familiar voice rang out, bright and warm and unmistakable. A voice that very much did not belong here. Before he knew it, his feet were off the ground as nearly seven fulms’ worth of elezen knight swept him into a crushing hug. There was a time when Holle would have panicked at such sudden and inescapable, overwhelming touch, but now he welcomed it with a stunned laugh.
“Haurchefant?! How-” Haurchefant was less interested in answering and more interested in squeezing the life out of him, however, until Holle wheezed out, “Haurchefant, please…!” “Oh! Apologies, my friend!” Haurchefant set him down, but left his hands on his shoulders as he looked him up and down. “The last time I saw you, you…” He shook his head. “I’ve been so worried. But here you are! Are you well? You look…” “I’m fine,” Holle answered, before Haurchefant could start in on too many concerns. “I just don’t- How are you here?” “I find the explanation rather lacking, myself, but the same way that you are here, I expect. By accident. But I will confess, quite a happy one!” “Happy?” Holle gave him a look. “What about being here is happy?” “Why, you are here, my friend! And as I said, last I saw you…”
Ghimlyt Dark. Holle hadn’t forgotten. One moment, he’d been in battle, fighting beside Haurchefant, and the next thing he knew…on the floor of the Ocular, with a pounding headache and absent all his clothes. “Right. Sorry about that.” “Nonsense! It’s no fault of yours.” Haurchefant ruffled his hair, and Holle smiled up at him, only to flinch in the glaring light. “Ah, perhaps we might go inside? It is terribly bright, though I suspect you get used to it.” “Not really,” Holle muttered, turning to lead the way toward the Wandering Stairs. As Haurchefant caught him up on what had happened since he’d collapsed, Holle smiled in spite of himself. At least now there was someone here he could trust.

The slam of the door behind Holle was as surprising as his tone; outbursts from the mage were rare, and Haurchefant could count on one hand the times he’d witnessed one. That he was allowed to was telling, he knew, that in this case it was a choice: Holle was frustrated, angry, and was trusting him with it. “Why bother? Why did we even come all this way if we’re just letting her stay anyway?” Haurchefant didn’t interrupt, and instead just listened, watching as Holle paced out his agitation. “She shouldn’t be here! None of them should be, but this is just a fucking game to her! I can’t believe he’s letting her do this.” When Holle’s pacing paused and his words bled into a growl as his frustration eclipsed his ability to voice it, Haurchefant set a hand on his shoulder, and Holle took it as the invitation it was to tuck himself against him. Haurchefant felt the deep breaths he took, the little tremor of anger being released. “This isn’t just some harmless little adventure,” he grumbled into his chest, “Messing with someone’s rite of succession? It doesn’t feel right.”
Haurchefant wrapped his arms around his smaller lover and pressed a kiss to the top of his head. This was a discussion they’d had before, when Holle had ultimately decided to refuse the invitation to Tural, extended to him in his cousin’s place, as she was…unavailable. But he had happened to be in Old Sharlayan when the ship departed, there with his family to see his younger brother settled in at the Studium, only for his sister to stow away. And now here they were, having chased her to Tuliyollal, ostensibly to retrieve her. Except not, apparently. “I’m sure he has his reasons. Did you ask?” “No,” Holle admitted. “What’s the point? It wouldn’t change anything.” “Maybe not. But you might feel better if you talked to him about it.” Haurchefant knew it was unlikely; there were very few people Holle was willing to be completely open with, and though he was malms ahead of where he’d once been, he still kept much of himself hidden, even from his own family. Even X’rhun. Holle shook his head. “I don’t want to.”
Haurchefant knew better than to push. He knew how difficult it could be for Holle to express himself, to allow himself to be seen. He also knew that he was exhausted, that he’d been beside himself with worry ever since they’d realized what X’zayaa had done, and now he was angry and frustrated with his own father. “We should go out, hmm? Get you something to eat.” Another shake of his head. “Not hungry.” “You’re never hungry,” he pointed out, “And you haven’t eaten all day.” Rather than push any further than that, however, he guided him gently toward the sofa that faced the spectacular view of the ocean and sat him down, tucking the slender xaela securely against him. “Later, maybe.” Holle nestled into him and sighed. “I’m sorry. I know you must want to see everything, I just- I can’t right now.” “It’s alright. It will all be there tomorrow, and the next day. Whenever you’re ready.” Haurchefant leaned his head against Holle’s. Adventurer, slayer of primals, one of the Warriors of Light, saviors of the star, and yet he could be so, so fragile. So easily overwhelmed, not by crisis or danger, but by his own emotions.
As they sat in silence for a long while, Haurchefant could feel as Holle’s breathing evened out, and the tension gradually ebbed from his body. Before he could fall asleep - and Haurchefant suspected that once he did, he wouldn’t wake until morning - he reiterated, “You should eat, though.” Holle huffed out a long-suffering sigh. “I could find you some soup? Maybe some tea?” He could feel the little nod. “Anything’s fine.” Haurchefant stroked his hair and kissed his head. “Alright then. You stay here, I’ll go and find us something.” As he stood, Holle held onto his arm for a moment and gently rubbed his horn against it, a gesture of quiet affection that filled Haurchefant with warmth. “Thank you.” “Of course.” Adventures could wait. For tonight, this was enough.
