hello it is April 4th in the first Autistic People's Month and I am really hoping to fall asleep before the 5th day of Autistic People's Month #AutRes
💯 There are some awesome papers on the double empathy and now triple empathy problem
searching #AutRes will find some great ones
I'm sure there is but after a quick search I haven't posted anything and don't see an #AutRes post about it
I will keep the tab open in my brain
➡️ What are the experiences, strengths & needs of autistic teachers?
➡️ How should we re-think the teacher role to be neurodiversity-inclusive?
Summary of research from the Autistic School Staff Project, with links to open access resources 👇🏻

We hope that the findings of this paper and the upcoming resource will help inform more accessible, tailored support to promote financial security and meaningful post-retirement lives for autistic people.

We’re in the process of creating an informational resource that will hopefully help with planning for retirement, including signposting to helpful information about pensions.
#AutRes doi.org/10.1177/1362... 9/x
There is still very little research on retirement in autistic populations, and this study highlights both shared and unique challenges in this life transition.
#AutRes doi.org/10.1177/1362... 8/x
➡️ Hopes for retirement were also similar in both groups, including looking forward to greater autonomy, meaningful time with friends and family, self-care, and pursuing personal interests.
#AutRes doi.org/10.1177/1362... 7/x
➡️ Concerns about retirement were similar in both groups, including isolation, loss of routine, and financial insecurity.
#AutRes doi.org/10.1177/1362... 6/x
➡️ Many autistic participants also highlighted a lack of accessible information about pensions and lifestyle planning.
#AutRes doi.org/10.1177/1362... 5/x
➡️ The journey to retirement also appeared to differ; autistic participants often reported lower rates of full-time employment, reduced pension eligibility, and lower pre-retirement income.
#AutRes doi.org/10.1177/1362... 4/x
➡️ However, autistic participants were less likely to have made retirement plans. ➡️ Among those with plans, the autistic participants were more likely to experience disruptions. This was often attributed to financial, health, or personal factors.
#AutRes doi.org/10.1177/1362... 3/x
➡️ Autistic (n=395) and non-autistic (n=122) participants reported similar expected or actual retirement ages.
#AutRes doi.org/10.1177/1362... 2/x
📝 Our new mixed-methods paper exploring retirement experiences in autistic populations is now out in @journalautism.bsky.social, open access: doi.org/10.1177/1362....
Here are some key findings ⬇️

Poster titled “Have you needed Emergency Care?” “About the Survey”: The survey explores what shapes decisions about seeking care from a hospital emergency department and how people experience the environment and interactions within it. It uses a neurodiversity-informed approach and particularly welcomes responses from autistic, ADHD, dyslexic or dyspraxic adults, whether formally diagnosed or self-identified, alongside people who identify as neurotypical. The aim is to understand patterns and needs across diverse experiences and inform how emergency care services can better support a wide range of people. “Who can take part”: You can take part if you are 18 or over, live in the UK, and have needed emergency healthcare, whether you attended an emergency department or not. “How to take part”: The survey takes approximately 15 minutes, depending on how much you choose to share. We are conducting a UK-wide study exploring how adults experience emergency care, including how people seek care and how it is delivered once they arrive.

Such an honour to have been invited to deliver the 2026 CRAE Annual Lecture 🤩
I'll be sharing reflections from my time supporting the House of Lords Autism Act 2009 Committee, and discussing how we can build a future where autistic people’s rights, needs, and voices truly shape policy.

A Review article published in Discover Mental Health highlights recent advancements in gene therapy for monogenic ASDs, demonstrating promising preclinical results that suggest potential broader applications for therapeutic interventions across the entire autism spectrum. 🧪 #AutRes

“Autistic respondents were also more likely to have a diagnosis of several co-occurring physical health conditions, including dysautonomia/POTS, Chronic Fatigue/ME, and Mast Cell Activation Syndrome.” #AutRes

“Autistic people actively assess risk and relational trust in deciding when and how to stim, revealing stimming as a socially negotiated act shaped by safety, disclosure, and belonging.” #AutRes
Une vie et
cette quête d’un trésor,
sans en voir la valeur,
tant d’années sans en voir la couleur.
Et pourtant, depuis tout ce temps,
il était devant nos yeux
et était si précieux.

“This discussion is a call for compassion that moves beyond surface-level recognition and toward the dismantling of systemic blind spots.
To understand Black neurodivergent lives is to confront the ways racism, ableism, and stigma converge — to silence needs or pathologize difference.”

"Autistic adults experience extremely high rates of depression, anxiety & other mental health concerns.
Autistic adults w/ greater alexithymia found cognitive strategies more difficult to use, while those who engaged in more frequent self-talk found cognitive strategies easier to use."

Yes. yes it is. #AutRes Kinda wish I'd saved those posts. Didn't think about them until far too late. Bleh. Still, great tag and content and humans. Good happy tag, that one. 🖖
"Things like this" meaning research about autism, the differences in how it can present, the science and lived experience behind assertions commonly made, and my opinions about those things
#AutRes in general is a great tag/feed to keep an eye on
