Poster titled “Have you needed Emergency Care?”
“About the Survey”: The survey explores what shapes decisions about seeking care from a hospital emergency department and how people experience the environment and interactions within it. It uses a neurodiversity-informed approach and particularly welcomes responses from autistic, ADHD, dyslexic or dyspraxic adults, whether formally diagnosed or self-identified, alongside people who identify as neurotypical. The aim is to understand patterns and needs across diverse experiences and inform how emergency care services can better support a wide range of people.
“Who can take part”: You can take part if you are 18 or over, live in the UK, and have needed emergency healthcare, whether you attended an emergency department or not.
“How to take part”: The survey takes approximately 15 minutes, depending on how much you choose to share. Website link: EDSurvey.Link

Which brings us back to those questions:

1/ Whose problem is autism being treated as?
2/ And whose interests are being served by that?

And...

3/ What kind of future is being imagined??

Then, as we’re not listened to, society's understanding of autism develops without us.🤷🏽‍♀️

That flawed understanding is then used to overrule us, again.

Strange little loop. ➰

New issue: What really causes autism? | BBC Science Focus Magazine Our best research – studies that looked at the health records of millions of children – has, to date, found no causal link between taking acetaminophen (otherwise known as paracetamol and sold under the brand name Tylenol in the US) during pregnancy and the onset of autism. In fact, as rates of autism diagnoses have gone up, acetaminophen use during pregnancy has actually gone down. So why do some high-profile US politicians suggest otherwise? Well, there was a study, published a decade ago, that looked at data collected on almost 2,650 children, which did find an effect. But it’s possible that this research was actually observing the effect of whatever symptom the drug was meant to treat – not the drug itself. The backdrop to this row is the undeniable observation that autism diagnoses are on the rise. One in 59 children were thought to have the condition in the US in 2015; that figure is now one in 31, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Most experts attribute this rise to improvements in identifying autism. Indeed, we’ve gotten better at understanding what autism looks like in all its forms. And therein lies some clarity. Just as we’re beginning to understand that there are different types of autism, there are likely to be several factors that can shift the dance between genetics and the environment as your brain develops during pregnancy. Timing is everything in the womb, which is why one scientist is growing tiny human brains (or at least parts of them) in a lab – to find out when and where the first signs of autism appear.

Autism in Women May Be More Extreme Than in Men, Massive Study Finds For decades, autism has been understood as a condition that overwhelmingly affects boys. Walk into any specialist clinic, scan any epidemiological database, and the ratio stares back at you: roughly four males diagnosed for every one female. Scientists have long accepted this disparity as a basic fact of the condition. A sweeping new meta-analysis the largest of its kind, drawing on data from more than 1.2 million people across 34 studies now offers the clearest answer yet and it comes with a twist that challenges everything we thought we knew about autism and sex.

Women with autism show larger cognitive shifts than autistic men challenging decades of assumptions.

Uta Frith says masking isn't real. Huh. That's weird, because there's a whole academic book (among other things) written about it.
Autistic Masking was published in 2023.
Somehow, I doubt she's read it. Sigh.
