🎬 19:00 Movie Night
On March 18, Political Prisoners’ Day, our Political Movie Night will focus on the 1981 hunger strike by Irish political prisoners from the IRA and the INLA.
Hunger strikes played a central role in the struggle for Irish independence.
Among other things, republican prisoners fought for the United Kingdom to recognize their status as political prisoners.
As part of its policy of “criminalization,” the Thatcher government ended this special status for political prisoners in 1976.
As a result, all Northern Irish Catholics suspected of pro-republican activism could henceforth be imprisoned without trial.
In May 1981, Bobby Sands, Francis Hughes, Raymond McCreesh, and Patsy O’Hara died after a hunger strike lasting several months; many more deaths followed in the months that followed: Joe McDonnell, Martin Hurson, Kevin Lynch, Kieran Doherty, Thomas McElvee, Michael Devine
Their deaths sparked protests and riots and had a major impact on Northern Ireland: they also led to an influx of new members for the IRA and strengthened the republican movement.
