Mindanao ist eine Insel und liegt im Süden der Philippinen, sie ist eine Region mit besonderer kultureller, religiöser und historischer Prägung. Seit Jahrzehnten existieren dort Autonomiebestrebungen muslimischer Bevölkerungsgruppen, die sich politisch und wirtschaftlich vom Zentrum vernachlässigt fühlen. Frühere Konflikte führten zu Friedensabkommen und schließlich zur Einrichtung der Bangsamoro-Autonomieregion (BARMM) im Jahr 2019, ein Versuch, Stabilität und Mitsprache zu fördern. Anfang 2024 löste der frühere Präsident Rodrigo Duterte mit einem öffentlichen Aufruf zur Unabhängigkeit Mindanaos eine landesweite Debatte aus. Unterstützt wurde er von Abgeordneten aus der Region, die ihre Unzufriedenheit mit der nationalen Regierung äußerten. Auch wenn Duterte seine Aussagen später relativierte, zeigten sie doch, dass sich in Mindanao politische Spannungen weiter aufgebaut haben. Gleichzeitig meldeten sich auch Vertreter früherer Rebellengruppen zu Wort, die sich gegen eine Abspaltung aussprachen und die Bedeutung des Friedensprozesses betonten. Im Oktober 2025 soll erstmal ein reguläres Parlament in der Bangsamoro-Region gewählt werden. Die Wahl gilt als Meilenstein im Friedensprozess und soll der Region mehr politische Legitimität verschaffen. Zugleich wird sie als Stimmungsbild gewertet: für den Erfolg oder die Schwächen des bisherigen Autonomiemodells. Die Diskussion um eine mögliche Abspaltung spiegelt tiefere Fragen nach nationaler Integration, regionaler Identität und politischer Teilhabe wider. Auch wenn die Mehrheit aktuell gegen eine tatsächliche Trennung ist, bleibt die Herausforderung bestehen, langfristig gerechte und stabile Lösungen zu finden, im Rahmen eines vereinten philippinischen Staates.
