four drawings of barbourofelis fricki, the largest species of extinct family barbourofelidae. while they share many similarities with cats and is closely related, barbourofelids themselves are not true cats. it is a lion-sized, saber-toothed feliform with notably large lower jaw flanges, which sheath the large canines when the mouth is closed to protect them. it had a slightly downward-sloped back like a hyena, plantigrade (flat) feet, and a short tail. this reconstruction depicts it with tawny fur and some dark, solid spots similar to the spotted hyena, though not as large or covering as extensively; they are arranged in similarly organized “rows” as a genet’s. the muzzle and underside are slightly lighter, and the top portion of the muzzle is darker and has tear marks like a cheetah on each side. the legs are dark and the tail is ringed. a short, hyena-like mane is present on the front and back of the neck, and some slightly longer fur also forms a “crest” on the short tail similar to various hyena and large civet species. the ears and nose are fairly similar to a civet’s. the eyes are yellow. the left drawing depicts a mother carrying her cub; the cub is darker with a thicker mane that extends fully across the back and has rosettes. the other drawings depict a front view of the face with mouth closed and canines sheathed, a side profile with mouth open and canines unsheathed, and a full-body in an attacking pose with its claws extended.
