Winding down a #nobikeSunday feeling like I’ve barely accomplished anything that I needed to.
Since #bikeshoplife is picking up plus several other personal challenges, it’s gonna be a self imposed stressful month. #yayfun

Hey friends,
due to unforeseeable circumstances the shop has to stay closed Friday and Saturday (13/14th of March).
We are very sorry for any inconveniences caused by this.
We'll be back on Monday, ready to welcome our new trainee, Renaud.

Adjacent: Guessing that most of what I would call the "traditional bike industry" have not spent any time thinking how this will massively affect their business models - and likely already is.

The boomer cash cow is heading out to pasture.

Their kids have less money.

What now? #bikeshoplife

This is such a cool tool.

In this case I'm comparing frame geometry for a $1000 'fitness' bike and a $4000 new skool ATB touring bike.

Remarkable how similar they are. #marketing #bikeshoplife

Based on a representative survey of 25,000 people across 25 European countries, the 2025 State of the Nation report highlights three interconnected challenges shaping the future of cycling: access to bicycle maintenance, children’s safety, and the pace of infrastructure development.

Shimano Europe released their "State Of The Nation" report and, predictably, challenges to cycling participation are on the rise.
Interesting to me to see bicycle maintenance issues being so prominent... #bikeshoplife

Most breakdowns don’t happen suddenly.
They whisper their intent for weeks.

Regular service checks aren’t about perfection.
They’re about avoiding breakdowns...and they're really cheap insurance. #utilitycycling #bikeshoplife

The Crisis in the Bike Industry Kevin McLaughlin on why e-bikes are great but the sector isn’t

"What it requires is acknowledging that bike retail absorbed a pandemic shock in service of public health goals, and that the hangover has not cleared on its own, and there is an appropriate public role in helping"

Things we often tell people not to buy:

• Lighter tires
• More speeds
• An upgrade they won’t feel
• Parts their bike doesn’t actually need

Light. Cheap. Strong. Pick two.

Trusted service means knowing when to say "you don't need that".

I don’t know how this ends. I only know how it continues.

Racing taught me how to suffer—to endure discomfort, to stay present when quitting would be easier, to measure effort honestly. Running a bike shop taught me why. It taught me that suffering only matters when it’s in service of something beyond the self: a neighbor getting to work without a car, a kid learning to ride in winter, a city that becomes slightly less fragile because someone chose pedals instead of panic.

I may never sell this place. I may never be able to point to a clean outcome and say this was the smart move. But when I look back at the arc of my working life, I hope I can say something simpler and truer: I understood the problem, and I embodied the change I wanted to see. I stayed. I helped. I did something positive with the time I was given.

That feels like enough.

BikeBike Dispatch January 2026 Note: This year I am going to post a few longer form brainwaves from time to time that will relate, maybe just tangentially, to things going on in our little corner of the bike industry…things rattling around in my head as I squirrel away in the shop...

"Light. Cheap. Strong. Pick 2."
This quote is widely attributed to Keith Bontrager and emerged WBITD when he was building bikes.
