Conceptual model illustrating the diagenetic pathways and redox conditions controlling early mineral precipitation across different depositional settings of the Pirabas Formation. The paleoenvironments include (1) mangrove, (2) restricted lagoon, and (3) bioclastic barrier (top of the formation). Panels show vertical redox zonation (oxic–suboxic–anoxic) and associated mineral precipitation during burial and subsequent uplift: (a–c) mangrove: precipitation of pyrite under anoxic conditions and transformation into hematite upon oxidation; (d–f) restricted lagoon: precipitation of calcite under suboxic conditions and later oxidation to hematite; (g–i) restricted lagoon (top the Pirabas Formation): precipitation of siderite under suboxic conditions, often associated with pyrite, followed by oxidation to hematite.
Some papers are inspiring in the wrong way. This is a very nice paper about #diagenesis and #bioturbation in the Miocene of Brazil. But as I was reading it I was going, "I think I can write a better version of this."
