Blog #32—Sharp-shinned Hawk (Alias A sudden scattering by birds at a feeding station may reveal the presence of a Sharp-shinned Hawk, the “little blue darter.”

Today I caught one of the largest female Mute Swans I've ever seen in the hand, with a 600mm wing - that's essentially adult male size. Thankfully she is in a well-established breeding pair, and thus could be correctly sexed (her mate is even bigger!). #birdringing #birdbanding #ornithology

Today is a parrot day. 7 years ago I banded this blue-crowned lorikeet in American Samoa. 6 years ago I banded this Pacific Parrotlet in Ecuador

Our 2nd earliest ever Chiffchaff caught & ringed @hilbrebirdobs.bsky.social today with @steveonhilbre.bsky.social. Earliest was 23/2/2019. Pollen horn & fat score suggest local movement rather than long distance. Contrast in greater coverts indicates 2nd calendar year bird #birdringing #birdbanding

Helped out bird banding at LLELA this morning. The bluebirds decided perching on the nets was better than flying into them. #birding #birdbanding

Over the past 60+ years, our banding labs have continuously evolved—growing with advances in technology and occasionally challenged by the forces of nature! We’re brainstorming and preparing to potentially upgrade our current setup, and we’re aiming high: we want to build the ULTIMATE BANDING LAB—and we need your help.
We’d love to see photos of your banding setups for inspiration. What tools, layouts, or features do you absolutely swear by? What can’t you live without in your lab?
Your input could make a big difference, and we can’t wait to see what ideas you have to share!

A photo of a Brown Thrasher being held by me in bander’s grip. The bird has a brown-rufous back and wings, a cream colored belly with brown stripes or dots down it and a bright yellow eye. The bright yellow eye tells us that this is an after-hatch-year bird. In the back ground a table with bird banding tools are visible.

Brown Thrashers are such cool birds. They were “tsk”ing all around us as we took measurements of this one.

All banding, marking, and sampling is being conducted under a federally authorized Bird Banding Permit issued by the U.S. Geological Survey’s BBL.
