The hay bails in this field made for some unique perches, and I found myself planning compositions and taking most of my shots while the owls were resting on top of them. Soon, these nomadic travelers will be heading back north to breed.

The Red-breasted Nuthatch irruption is still going strong, and it has finally arrived at our feeders! We had two of them visit us regularly today, and this one sat in the same spot admiring her tree treasure long enough for me to grab my camera and get some frames.

The arctic blast currently invading the midwest and northeast has me thinking about one of my favorite birds, the Canada Jay! These birds are born for the cold (literally) as they nest in late winter, incubating eggs in temperatures that can drop below negative twenty degrees!

Watching this brilliant yellow Western Tanager with its orange-red head was like watching a flame dance among the dark conifers. This was my first good look at an adult male during breeding season, and they are absolutely stunning!

I really enjoy observing Yellow-breasted Chat display flights where they shoot way up into the air and then flutter down to the ground softly all while shouting out a loud crazy cackle during the entire decent. They are definitely one of a kind!

I was already at eye level with this waterthrush on the opposite bank, so I just needed to find an open area with no branches to get a clean frame. Then, I composed it tiny-in-frame and used the happy fluffy trees to fill the entire background. Hope you like it!

Although Prothonotary warblers are more uncommon in our immediate area, there’s a good population of them living near the many lakes and streams and in the wooded swamps of southern NJ.

I had to get way down in the dirt to get to this Ovenbird’s level on the forest floor. They spend much of their time foraging on the ground, hopping along in leaf litter and atop logs looking for insects and other invertebrates.

As we welcome spring, more-and-more birds are setting out on migration routes to return to their breeding grounds, including this American Woodcock! Every yea, a handful of these birds stop over at Bryant Park, a small four acre patch in the middle of downtown Manhattan.

Here’s another shot from our Boreal owl encounter after it finally put some distance between itself and the messy brush. I was able to capture this image with some nice golden-hour light illuminating the brush behind him.

When we first found this Boreal owl, it was sitting back in heavy brush surrounded by messy branches on all sides. I had to try a few different angles and settings to produce a usable image.

Success! I went out to look for owls today and found this Screech owl within the last few minutes of my hike! This little one chose to roost in a nice natural cavity despite the hundreds of cavities along the trail that Pileated Woodpeckers are making.

We had a few inches of snow last week and I tried to get some backyard bird images in-between meetings. This White-throated Sparrow gave me a look like I was trying to steal his seeds!

Waved Albatross are the largest bird in the archipelago with a wingspan of up to eight feet! They have a long curved bill that appears almost too long for their small heads. But my absolute favorite feature are those gorgeous long eye-lashes!
#birds #birdbot #wildlifephotography #photography
Waved Albatross will mate for life, and the female lays one single egg each breeding season. Around six months old, the chicks will be old enough to start flying, and once that happens, they won’t land again for the first six years of their life.

Male frigatebirds will regularly inflate a thin, red, gular pouch on their throat with air. It takes about 20 minutes before the pouch is fully inflated. Once it’s inflated, they will spread their wings, cock their heads back, and shimmy from side-to-side to attract a female.
