I got sprung by this Australasian Bittern, as it saw me a spit second before I saw it, even though I was in full stalking mode. However it waited enough to allow me to bring my camera up and lock onto it before flushing.

Two takahē at a low metal feeder that is on the ground. You can see their short, thick, orange legs with large feet and both have ID bands. Beautiful plumage! The same as described before. Both are bent over and one looks like it is trying to pick up something from the feeder.
Same two takahē at the feeder. The one on the left's picking up a green fragment of some kind of fruit. The one on the right is looking upward and is crushing a piece of the fruit, I assume do it can swallow it. They both look very plump and it makes sense that this was a desireable food source for Māori and Europeans.
More takahē pictures. They were extirpated on the North Island, and thought to be extinct until a small enclave was found in the Murchison Mountains in 1948. There is a vigorous breeding program to increase populations. I think there is just two on the island. A male and a female. #BirdsofNewZealand
A takahē coming out of the bush. It looks prehistoric. The bird has dark plumage, black with hints of green and blue. It is a plump, stocky bird with a large thick bill. You can not see its short think legs.
It is famous for birds. New Zealand birds did not have ground based predators, so many birds evolved with nesting habits on the ground that made them very vulnerable to introduced predators. Many birds were extirpated and some went extinct. One of these is the takahē. #BirdsofNewZealand #Aotearoa
