This holiday season, get your books from small businesses and/or the public library. *Bookshop.org supports independent book sellers. Books ship from the closest store to the destination of your choosing. Plus they now offer eBooks.
*Allstora.com is RuPaul's online book seller that supports diverse storytellers and their livelihoods — doubling their profits compared to Amazon. Allstora's book clubs feature curated lists for LGBTQ+ communities. The Rainbow Book Bus, their philanthropic arm, provides books to underserved communities and those affected by books bans.
*The Los Angeles Public Library allows any Californian to get a library card. They have a robust digital library of traditional and audio books. Bonus: They also offer learning and movie-streaming platforms. Free is good! Apply online at lapl.org.

This holiday season, get clothes/goods from artists, small businesses, or second hand. Avoid big-box stores, Salvation Army, or Deseret because of their anti-labor stances and LGBTQ+ opposition.
*Etsy.com: You can find just about anything small-business made and curated on Etsy. You can also search the company name on Google and see if they have a website you can buy direct from. Then they won't have to pay a penny to the Etsy platform.
*Join a free group on Facebook (e.g. Free-Stuff Irvine, Buy Nothing Laguna Beach, etc.). These private groups are listed by city and everyone is vetted before joining. You can ask for something you want/need or you can post something you no longer need/want. There are rules: you can only join your city's page, and free means free — absolutely no exchange of money or bartering is allowed.
*Nextdoor: There are a lot of free things listed on Nextdoor Marketplace just like the FB free and buy nothing groups.
*Note: For the free groups, always meet somewhere neutral for handoff (Coffee Bean, Ralphs parking lot, etc.) and/or bring someone with you at pickup.
