Good evening #BlueBrewBooks! First time here. I'm currently slow reading Nerval's 'Les Filles du Feu'. Noting down new French vocabulary and looking up some of the literary references. This is a vintage copy found in a book exchange. Love the cover. 1/2

'Potin' un nouveau mot pour moi - c'est bien! Dans le village ici en Bourgogne, on entend 'cancans' ou 'commèrages’, mais mon mari, qui est français est d'accord pour 'potin' aussi. J'adore l'illustration sur cet livre. #BlueBrewBooks

Loved the 1st one in the series “Silver Pigs” in which smart-alec private informer Marcus Didius Falco gets sent to Britain - then the far fringes of the Roman Empire - to investigate who’s stealing from the silver mines there. Great fun!📚 #BlueBrewBooks

Thank you, Susan, for this recommendation! I am not yet done with Night Watch, by Jayne Anne Phillips, but I received Entangled Life by Merlin Sheldrake yesterday, so it has jumped the queue, and will be my next read for #BlueBrewBooks 📗

I didn’t finish reading 📖 the last book in the Emily Wilde’s series so no new book to report for #BlueBrewBooks 📚🤷🏼‍♂️
I hope you have a wonderful day☀️

Good morning Susan and happy Sunday 😊 ! Today for #BlueBrewBooks I am sharing this one that I liked.
Inspired by the real life Chicago heiress Mary Jayne Gold, who worked with American journalist Varian Fry to smuggle artists and intellectuals out of France.
The story begins in Paris, 1938.

I was hesitant to try the Murakami, but I am finding it surprisingly readable and quite fantastical. I'll say more when I finish!

Good morning everyone! My favorite fantasy series is Robin Hobb's Realm of the Elderlings. Seriously, this is the best fantasy I have ever read.

I'm working my way through my 3rd readthrough, and have started book 1 of the Rain Wilds Chronicles.

The tender story of a man and his son as they journey to the end of life. A man who all his life has made a garden wherever he lands and finally comes back to his home place to create his masterpiece garden, his legacy. The caring son who walks with his dad to his final day.

Phosphorescence is a natural phenomenon that allows some creatures--glow worms, fireflies, flashlight fish, even entire oceans--to give off light amidst darkness. Inspired by their simple beauty, Baird writes about the things that lit her way through the darkness (heartbreak and cancer): a connection to nature, friendships, her faith, her mother's example, deliberately experiencing awe and wonder, and other habits that changed her life. She also explores how others nurture their inner light, interviewing the founder of the modern forest therapy movement in Tokyo, a jellyfish scientist in Tasmania, and a tattooed priest from Colorado, among others.

A moving read that also makes you miss the ocean.

Happy #BlueBrewBooks day! ☕️ I’m recommending an Aussie memoir Phosphorescence by Julie Baird. It explores when we are overwhelmed by tragedy outside our control, how can we survive and bloom? Baird went in search of the magic that sustains us / fuels the light within—phosphorescence. More in Alt

Book cover of THE SALT STONES by Helen Whybrow

Good morning, Susan, and #BlueBrewBooks. This week I read The Salt Stones by Helen Whybrow. She shepherds a flock of Icelandic sheep on a farm in Vermont and writes about belonging—to the flock, to a family, and to a place. The chapter on harvesting wool will especially interest all the knitters. 🐑

#BlueBrewBooks add Twilight of the Godlings to the reading list as per the info below:

Theo of Golden is about a mysterious elderly man who moves to a small town in Georgia. On the walls of a coffee shop he frequents are hung 100 plus portraits painted by a local artist. Theo hatches a plan to begin buying the portraits and quietly gift them to the subjects. In the process, he has interesting interactions with the recipients, some who become close friends. Throughout most of the book we don’t really know much about Theo other than he is an immigrant and a wealthy, self-made “businessman” who rose from humble beginnings. He is cultured — a connoisseur of literature, music and the arts and speaks several languages.

There are a lot of religious undertones and symbolism throughout the book — Theo for instance derives from the Greek word Theos, meaning deity or God. The name Theo itself means “Gift of God” both in Greek and Portuguese. The coffee shop that is central to the story is called The Chalice, a word whose Biblical significance is rooted in the Last Supper and the Christian tradition of the Eucharist. The co-owner of the coffee shop is Shep - perhaps short for Shepherd. Theo throughout the book openly professes his unwavering belief in God and in Heaven.

Theo of Golden has received a lot of raving praise from readers but I have also seem plenty of detractors who don’t like the religious overtones or find the story too Pollyannaish. One commenter called Theo misogynistic and another said he was racist and xenophobic. I didn’t see that. An undocumented immigrant who caused a fatal car wreck is treated sympathetically. And Theo himself is an immigrant from Portugal. At worst, I saw Theo as a bit old-fashioned in some of his thinking.

Theo of Golden was a satisfying — and uplifting — read. There are a number of big surprises in the last couple of dozen or so pages that some may find shocking. The ending is satisfying, and pulls together the plot well. I would give Theo of Golden 3 out of 4 stars. It is not a classic, but it’s a worthy read.

I finished reading Allen Levi’s “Theo of Golden” about week. I was looking for an uplifting read and I got it. Much has been written about it, but I thought I would add my two cents. Please see ALT for my review. #BlueBrewBooks #BookReview #Books #TheoOfGolden #Novels #AllenLevi #Reading

A fun diversion for me. This book is a fantasy of an “academic” novel, complete with footnotes! A curmudgeonly professor is ostensibly writing notes in a journal for her planned book, but the result is simply wonderful storytelling. As you’ll see on the cover, this book was one of the New York Times’ Notable Books of the Year for 2023. A great book to put on your list for when you want a break, but are still willing to be caught up in another world. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and thank the several others here in BlueBrewBooks who recommended it.
