Theo of Golden is about a mysterious elderly man who moves to a small town in Georgia. On the walls of a coffee shop he frequents are hung 100 plus portraits painted by a local artist. Theo hatches a plan to begin buying the portraits and quietly gift them to the subjects. In the process, he has interesting interactions with the recipients, some who become close friends. Throughout most of the book we don’t really know much about Theo other than he is an immigrant and a wealthy, self-made “businessman” who rose from humble beginnings. He is cultured — a connoisseur of literature, music and the arts and speaks several languages. There are a lot of religious undertones and symbolism throughout the book — Theo for instance derives from the Greek word Theos, meaning deity or God. The name Theo itself means “Gift of God” both in Greek and Portuguese. The coffee shop that is central to the story is called The Chalice, a word whose Biblical significance is rooted in the Last Supper and the Christian tradition of the Eucharist. The co-owner of the coffee shop is Shep - perhaps short for Shepherd. Theo throughout the book openly professes his unwavering belief in God and in Heaven. Theo of Golden has received a lot of raving praise from readers but I have also seem plenty of detractors who don’t like the religious overtones or find the story too Pollyannaish. One commenter called Theo misogynistic and another said he was racist and xenophobic. I didn’t see that. An undocumented immigrant who caused a fatal car wreck is treated sympathetically. And Theo himself is an immigrant from Portugal. At worst, I saw Theo as a bit old-fashioned in some of his thinking. Theo of Golden was a satisfying — and uplifting — read. There are a number of big surprises in the last couple of dozen or so pages that some may find shocking. The ending is satisfying, and pulls together the plot well. I would give Theo of Golden 3 out of 4 stars. It is not a classic, but it’s a worthy read.
