Thin Section Thursday:
An epidote-rich vein in blueschist. Coarse epidote group minerals are intergrown with glaucophane (blue-violet in plane light) and Na-Ca amphibole (blue-green) + garnet. Field of view ~2 mm. Contributed by Donna Whitney. #blueschist #epidote #glaucophane
Layered blueschist sample. FOV 3 mm, PPL
1/ EXTRA - from the paper accepted yesterday - we have a new blueschist locality!
This is a really cool blueschist - that deserves an EBSD study in my opinion, because it is one of the few cases you can tie structures to the blueschist facies!

Metamorphosed mafic volcanic rock known as blueschist or glaucophane schist. Contains porphyroblasts of lawsonite (diamond-shaped), indicative of High P/LowT burial, also red, equant garnets.
The view west down the Täschtal towards the Matter valley, from the Saas-Zermatt ophiolite exposure at its upper, eastern end. There are pillow lavas too, and lovely wildflowers :)
#MineralMonday High pressure/low temperature #blueschist (glaucophane) facies metamorphism with lawsonite and garnet porphyroblasts. Zermatt-Saas zone. Täschtal (photo), Valais, Switzerland. #OUGS Alps 2000 with Bill Fitches
Blueschist, a rock consisting of blue Na-amphibole, greenish epidote, and white mica, as seen under the petrographic microscope.
I have a fetish for blueschists found in places where they were not reported 😂. Before leaving Japan, I managed to find a new blueschist locality. Just waiting to have the time to publish this cutie pie ❤️

Microphotograph taken at the petrographic microscope showing a blueschist, a type of metamorphic rock that forms at high-pressure in subduction zones.
#blueschist for #bluesky for my first 600 followers 🥳🎉
The blues are zoned sodic amphiboles (crossite core, glaucophane rim), the green is mostly epidote
Plane polarized light
Field of view: 2.5 mm
From a paper I wrote on the Sanbagawa - which I hope will come out soon...

Collage of several microphotos across 1 cm width showing your friendly mylonitic marble of the neighborhood. The porphyroblasts are huge albites that contain glaucophane inclusions. Yes, this is the exhumed blueschist of Elba :)
