Happy Holidays everyone! Since today is Christmas Day, I thought I would post a #Christmas #rock from #Norway. #Eclogite is an ultra-high pressure rock created in #subduction zones (~90 km depth). It is made of #garnet (red) and #omphacite (green).
Retrograde eclogite imprinted with blueschist facies minerals including phengite (golden flakey mineral), actinolite (black needles), and glaucophane (blue).

In things that make me happy, a bit of the collection...Lawsonite blueschist, eclogitic blueschist, glaucophanite, various eclogites, orthopyroxenite, clinopyroxenite, garnet websterite

Makapuʻu-Stage #Koʻolau Basalt has the most radiogenic Sr87/86 of #Hawaiʻi #lavas, low εNd, Hf176/177, and Pb206/204, and high La/Nb and Sr/Nb indicating a filament of recycled material (secondary garnet #pyroxenite via #eclogite) of the Hawaiian ULVZ associated with the Pacific LLSVP.

The red dots are garnet grains, which occur in a rock called eclogite. The greenish material around the garnets is chlorite, another mineral that has partly or totally replaced the garnets. Japanese 100 yen coin for scale.

For #MineralMonday I want to share some sexy #garnet grains being replaced by #chlorite in retrogressed #eclogite

Polished slab of eclogite, a rock produced by metamorphism in subduction zones
For #RockinTuesday I show you this neat #eclogite slab exposed in an open air museum in the Besshi area (Shikoku, Japan). Along the usual red garnet and green omphacite, this rock contains quartz, calcite, rutile, zoisite, kyanite, and phengite.
FOV about 10 cm.

#eclogite, the most beautiful rock type on earth.😍
two rectangles: garnet red color of the Washington Commanders next to dark green with a bluish tint of the Philadelphia Eagles.
The primary colors of next week’s two NFC teams pair perfectly, geologically speaking. ⚒️ #geology #eclogite
#Makapuʻu lends its name to the Makapuʻu-Stage lavas of the #Koʻolau Basalt. They have the highest 87Sr/86Sr of #Hawaiʻi #lavas, low 143Nd/144Nd, 176Hf/177Hf, and 206Pb/204Pb, and high La/Nb and Sr/Nb indicating a recycled component (likely secondary #pyroxenite via #eclogite) of the Pacific LLSVP.
Eclogite as seen under the microscope.

Mount Higashi-Akaishi [東赤石山]
'Aka' [赤] means 'red', 'ishi' [石] means 'rock'.... so there are red rocks here. Yes, they are mantle peridotites.
A beautiful package of mantle wedge #peridotite that experienced #eclogite -facies metamorphism and that you can nicely walk on.
