Finished "Turn of the Screw." Any other #blysky readers have the 2017 Penguin edition? The I tro essay notes that the "the ghosts aren't real" interpretation goes all the way back to the 1920s/1930s 🪛

Soooo…

She killed him? With her “personal triumph” and “blind with victory”?

I have the sense the governess is responsible for Miles’ death, but can’t say why.

One thing that’s been bugging me is the governess’s defining Miss Jessel as toweringly, monumentally, by definition evil.
Where was she that evil? Getting pregnant? Did she commit suicide, was that it? Crossing class boundaries? It all seems pretty disproportionate. 1/

pulled me up. We continued silent while the maid was with us-as silent, it whimsically occurred to me, as some young couple who, on their wedding journey, at the inn, feel shy in the presence of the waiter. He turned round only when the waiter had left us. "Well—so we're alone!"

Whimsical, yeah, right. Maybe not. #BlySky 🪛

Oh Good Grief! James’ father was a Swedenborgian theologian.
I was just looking up his brother the psychologist, wondering if his thought might have influenced Turn of the Screw. Then I saw that about his father, and whoo boy, talk about cultivating relationships with the spiritual plane.

In a book I read called CHAMELEO, a person who was a mentally ill drug addict swore he was seeing invisible people. And… true? Because who better for the secret invisibility tech to be tested on, than those who won’t be believed.

So maybe the ghosts are drawn to the governess? #BlySky 🪛

This is as good a chapter as any to say that Henry James’ refusal to say what he means drives me crazy. So much happens between the words! Meaning is absent, or repeated imperfectly, or partly shown, or glimpsed only in silhouette. My poor brain sparks all over and emits confused smoke. #BlySky 🪛

The "anecdote in question is recorded by Charles Lamb (1775-1834) in his essay, \"Christ's Hospital Five-and-Thirty Years Ago.\" Lamb recalls the reaction of Samuel Taylor Coleridge on learning that their former headmaster, James Boyer, a great advocate of corporal punishment, was dying: \"Poor J.B.!—may all his faults be forgiven. And may he be wafted to bliss by little cherub boys, all head and wings, with no bottoms to reproach his sublunary infirmities.\"" ↵

I hunted down the anecdote about the cherubs. Tl, dr: it’s a spanking joke. #Blysky 🪛

“The person looking straight in was the person who had already appeared to me. He appeared thus again with I won't say greater distinctness, for that was impossible, but with a nearness that represented a forward stride in our intercourse and made me, as I met him, catch my breath and turn cold.”

Excerpt From
The Turn of the Screw
Henry James

Are all 19th Century American writers as into double entendres as Melville and (now) James, or is it just the cool sexy ones? “intercourse” tee hee! “Screw” hee hee hee!

Also, the governess’ sexual repression… I mean she kissed Mrs. Grose and now intercourse with a Quint! Does she know?!? #Blysky 🪛

I adore the description of Peter turning away but still never breaking his stare. The kind of thing only a book can do which would be impossible to portray visually, and I applaud any writer who takes advantage of that. #blysky 🪛
