One thing that’s been bugging me is the governess’s defining Miss Jessel as toweringly, monumentally, by definition evil.
Where was she that evil? Getting pregnant? Did she commit suicide, was that it? Crossing class boundaries? It all seems pretty disproportionate. 1/

pulled me up. We continued silent while the maid was with us-as silent, it whimsically occurred to me, as some young couple who, on their wedding journey, at the inn, feel shy in the presence of the waiter. He turned round only when the waiter had left us. "Well—so we're alone!"

Oh Good Grief! James’ father was a Swedenborgian theologian.
I was just looking up his brother the psychologist, wondering if his thought might have influenced Turn of the Screw. Then I saw that about his father, and whoo boy, talk about cultivating relationships with the spiritual plane.

In a book I read called CHAMELEO, a person who was a mentally ill drug addict swore he was seeing invisible people. And… true? Because who better for the secret invisibility tech to be tested on, than those who won’t be believed.

So maybe the ghosts are drawn to the governess? #BlySky 🪛

This is as good a chapter as any to say that Henry James’ refusal to say what he means drives me crazy. So much happens between the words! Meaning is absent, or repeated imperfectly, or partly shown, or glimpsed only in silhouette. My poor brain sparks all over and emits confused smoke. #BlySky 🪛
