That all said, I *do* think that using a government shutdown to achieve this policy goal *does* weaken our political institutions and unfairly victimizes #FederalEmployees. Move the #borderwallfunding debate to its own issue in Congress separate from funding basic services. /4

While I view #borderwallfunding as a poor use of taxes as well as an extremely shameful moral symbol not in line with America's best ideals, I don't think that the issue *per se* weakens liberal democratic norms and institutions similar to much of Trump's governing approach. /3

I strongly oppose the president's #borderwallfunding proposal from both a policy and moral perspective, but I think there is a reasonable case to be made for both the president and House Democrats pursuing their goals on the issue. More here:...
