A small Green Heron (Butorides virescens) stands on a weathered wooden log beside calm blue-gray water. The bird is crouched low, leaning forward with its long neck stretched straight out, giving it a sneaky, stalking posture. One wing is partially lifted, showing dark feathers edged with pale lines. Its head is dark with a sharp, pointed bill aimed forward, and a bright yellow-green eye stands out. The body is compact and dark brown with lighter streaks on the chest. Thin yellow-green legs grip the log as the bird appears poised to move or strike. Green Herons are one of the few birds known to use tools, sometimes dropping insects or bread on the water to lure fish.
While his Cagney impression was sorely lacking, his Road Runner, including the “Beep Beep,” were spot on.
