These guys show up periodically and I’m not sure quite how to describe it, but they have the most entitled air about them. Like they know how good looking they are and expect to be waited on.

It’s not just them, mind. There is chronically a lot of bird poo on the verandah railing 👀 🫣

We live near an industrial area. Apart from one factory that was releasing noxious fumes into the air for about a decade before a residents’ campaign to force the company to get it under control, it’s not particularly noxious as far as industrial areas go. And has afforded us a nice view 😅

I just found a photo of our backyard from June 2023. I was nearing the end of my year-long blitz of Hypoestes phyllostachya (a weed still being flogged by Bunnings). The turkeys were enjoying a dust bath in the bare soil, and I was desperately trying to protect the new plantings 😳

Our laundry door looks like a Halloween prop.… I feel very vindicated in my laziness now that the mass of brown-house-spider webs has brought me this miracle of nature in a conveniently viewable location 😁

Spent most of the day trimming plants (after a bit over a week away it’s so nice to find them overgrown and not dead!). Saw a group of 3 baby bush turkeys and another duo. One of the duo is losing his face fuzz and growing a stubby little tail 😍

Was sick of being mocked by the possum every night and one particular turkey every day so I finally got the bananas down 😅

This time of year we get flies in the house every day. These ones are by far the worst offenders. We have flyscreens but they lurk at doors and sneak inside. I watch them in the garden sometimes to remind myself they have a valuable role to play as pollinators 😒

This is how we tell when the bananas are getting ripe here in Brisbane:

These ones are ‘bluggoe plantain’. Good eating raw or cooked
(kelewele 🤤)
I have no idea about bananas but this mob sound like they know what they are talking about -

1. Australians: you can eat native Commelina. AKA ‘scurvy weed’, apparently. Raw or cooked, super-mild flavour. Grows like a weed. Flowers attract blue-bottomed bees. What a winner 🤩

This afternoon I found ‘Tawny Dad’ on the ground underneath our mango tree, with his family still perched above. He looked very unwell so I popped him in a box and called a SEQ wildlife rescue org to ask for advice on the recommended local vet to take him to.

Found this photo from my run yesterday. 5:36am. What a contrast to today- back in jeans and long sleeves for the first time in about a month 😵‍💫

Spotted a small garden skink wrestling this much larger leaf-rolling cricket, which fled to the top of an ornamental ginger leaf.

Cricket is not something I can ID, but iNaturalist says ‘Tribe Phryganogryllacridini’ (easier to say than it looks 😅).

Every time I find an interesting new moth and ID it through iNaturalist it turns out the larvae eat some kind of fruit tree 😑🥲

In this case, lychee and longan (also tuckeroo, which are planted as street trees around here). Sauris malaca. Probably.

It was already so warm when I got back from my run this morning around 7am that there was steam coming from parts of the garden (and the neighbour’s garden behind).

This is what we’ve had to do to our front verge to stop Timmy from excavating it and taking the whole lot across the road.

I grew up calling them ‘topknot pigeons’; apparently they’re more commonly called ‘crested pigeons’ (Ocyphaps lophotes). My favourite is the males’ OTT pompous courtship displays, but this doofus down the street was a pretty entertaining sight this morning 😁

Ever wondered what noise a ringtail possum makes? I sure had! We’ve lived here for years and never heard a peep out of them until yesterday. Sound at ~21s and 37s

At night the fruit bats visit our trees and fly past our windows; in the morning I run past their little colony in Tarragindi.

Fun fact: Fruit bat poo is the only thing I have found literally impossible to wash out of clothing.

I was trying for a photo of Timmy but my gloves were wet and muddy so it kept taking video. Check out his eyebrows 🥸😁
