So let me get this straight. Not only the black has had to fight to get in the school building, but once they made it inside, they had to be gone before sunset. Welcome to the world of sundown schools, because apparently education had a curfew if your skin was too brown for comfort. These were schools that didn't need big racist signs outfront. No, no, the rule is whispered through the hallways. Black students could come to class, but only if they kept their heads down, didn't ask too much, and most importantly, left before the afterschool programs magically filled up Clubs. Oh, there's no space. Sports teams. You missed the signup tutoring. Sorry, that's full. Meanwhile, Little Jacob's mom called and got him in five minutes before the message was loud and clear. School was never about expanding opportunity. It was about containing you. They didn't want you growing, confidence, forming community, or, god forbid, becoming exceptional. They wanted you out, quiet, grateful, gone. And if you stayed too long, they'd dim the lights, lock the doors, or even call the cops. Because suddenly the student who sat in fourth period math class became a threat at four fifteen. They called them places of learning, but there were really institutions of polite exclusion. No violence, no signs, just the ratio by bell schedule. And don't let them tell you As ancient history, some of your favorite school districts are still running the same playbook. America swears the education is the great equalizer. But let's be real. They built sundown schools to remind black kids exactly what time it was and who that education was really meant for. Share, believe, inspire Blacks be.
