Post: They built a town to escape white violence. Then the government starved it without ever lifting a weapon. Black DM, New Mexico was founded in the early nineteen hundreds by black Civil War veterans and their families. It was more than a town. It was a promise that black people could live free, build wealth and control their future. They settled on dry, rugged land and made it work. They built homes, a church, a school, businesses, they farmed. They traded. They thrived in spite of the odds, until they asked for water. Blagden was legally denied access to critical water rights by the same US agencies that gave them freely to nearby white towns. No water meant no crops, No crops meant no income. No income meant no future. By the nineteen twenties, Black DM had collapsed not because of war or fire, but because of paperwork and policy. It vanished from maps and from memory. But the land it sat on, it's now oil rich region, pumping wealth from beneath the very soil that once held black dreams. And the black families who built the town. Oh, they got nothing. No compensation, no acknowledgement, no return, no reparations, no plaques, no justice. A self - sustaining black community was choked to death by quiet cruelty, not burned, just erased. And when I realised that Blagdon was buried under the same land now enriching others that broke me. Follow if Stories like this deserve to be remembered.
