Spaceballs: The Totally Warped Animated Adventures Product description Spaceballs: The Totally Warped Animated Adventures Amazon.com Mel Brooks's resumé lists more than a few winning titles--The Producers, Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles--but it's a sure bet that Spaceballs: The Totally Warped Animated Adventures will never be among them. The 1987 live-action movie that inspired this 2008 series wasn't one of Brooks's masterworks either. But at least it was an amusing Star Wars takeoff with a good cast, and it's Shakespeare compared to this mess, which Brooks executive produced and wrote, in addition to providing the voices for the evil President Skroob and Yogurt, the Yoda-like character who's forever reminding hero Lone Starr (voiced by Rino Romano) to "use the Schwartz." The four episodes contained here all have something to do with Skroob's plan to conquer the universe (with the assistance of the Darth Vader-like Dark Helmet), but whatever passes for plot is entirely secondary to a seemingly endless, unfunny parade of barf gags (the first episode, "Outbreak," is almost nothing but); toilet humor; penis jokes; rampant sexual innuendo; references to other, better movies (The Terminator, Back to the Future, The Wizard of Oz, and on and on); and the usual dose of Jewish "wit." One wonders what kind of audience Brooks was going for. The jokes are too moronic for any sentient grownup and too adult for the younger kids who normally watch animated fare; that leaves adolescent males, who may get a few laughs but will probably be too preoccupied playing video games like the one parodied in "Grand Theft Starship" (an episode that boasts the most clever and imaginative animation) to pay much attention. If this is the best the octogenarian Brooks can do, he should seriously consider retirement. --Sam Graham

There really was a #Spaceballs animated series. I almost forgot about it.
