visited #CentraleMontemartini yesterday and was totally floored when I encountered this life-size #tropaeum. My article on the tropaeum in the #Aeneid will come out in a few months. Looking at it, I was more than ever convinced that these monuments marked the trauma of war as well as victory.

HERRINGBONE MOSAIC FLOOR, C. 10 BCE. CENTRALE MONTEMARTINI This floor mosaic style is one of the oldest in Rome, even though this particular one is from the late C1 BCE or even the early C1 CE. Here we have a black basalt mosaic background, with white marble tesserae in two sizes, a smaller square set that describes a rough grid, and a larger rectangular set in horizontal rows in a herringbone design. The very simple design and materials indicate a relatively inexpensive mosaic floor, but if we imagine the background in white marble and the rectangular pieces in different colours and shapes, we have something that approaches the oldest mosaic pavement of the temple of Capitoline Jupiter, obviously a high-prestige pavement. This is a normal trickle-down effect: as mosaics in Rome became more sophisticated, older styles became less expensive.
